likelihood of schizophrenia
    #6286674 - 11/15/06 04:39 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

Sorry if this question is already posted but I've searched all over the net with no luck.

My uncle is a schizophrenic, but I've been wanting to do shrooms for a while. From research I've read pretty much the same thing everywhere I looked: "Individuals with a family history of schizophrenia or early onset mental illness should be extremely careful because mushrooms have been known to trigger latent psychological and mental problems."

My question is: is it possible to develop PERMANENT schizophrenia from taking shrooms no more than 10 times?

If it helps in answering my question, I've been smoking weed almost everyday for one to two years with absolutely no problems and I have a lot of control over my high. I also tried a half eighth of shrooms once but barely tripped.

I just want to make sure it's not a big risk before I try more.

Thanks for the help!

You could develop permanent schizophrenia with one use if you are vulnerable.

I have schizophrenia on both sides of my family(one suicide). Psychedelics did help me to understand schizophrenia alot better because there are some similarities between schizophrenia and a psychedelic trip.

I have tripped around 170 times, mostly on lsd and mushrooms. I have never had a problem, but I would have to say they have made me more schizotypal than I ever was before. I have always tripped differently than most people. I seem to find meaning, sychronicity, metaphores etc everywhere, everytime I trip, unlike most people I know. I also believe in some crazy things though they may be quite scientific. Sort of on par with T Mckenna and his brother....

I honestly would be less worried about lsd if I were you. I would be more careful with things like dmt, mushrooms and most of all, ayahuasca.

"My question is: is it possible to develop PERMANENT schizophrenia from taking shrooms no more than 10 times"?

My answer would be yes, its definately possible.
Its even possible for a normal person with no schizotypal tendancies to become much more schizotypal, even schizophrenic because of psychedelics.

Its not a HUGE risk, but there is that chance. You will likely know better about the answer to your question once you take a dose that gives you full effects.
Its really up to you. You do smoke alot of pot after all and that can also bring about this illness.

I know one person who had been schizophrenic for years but was not diagnosed untill his later life due to a breakdown. He took mushrooms earlier in life, and that did make it worse. It was the straw that broke the camels back. Needless to say, he really likes hallucinogens, feels very at home with them, but knows he can never take them again because it blurs the line between his imagination and reality.

What I just said is probably what he would say to you.

Its definately worth a shot, but there is no number of trips that is the breaking point. I mean, this guy was schizophrenic for most of his adult life, he still used hallucinogens safely for a number of years before it became very apparent that he needed to stop.

Mushrooms have a sort of personality, a sort of otherworldly feel.
Damn near magical. They pick you up and drop you off where ever they want. Ego loss on mushrooms could be a real bitch for a potential schizophrenic because you cant see it coming. It just happens. With lsd,for me and others that I know and even people I have talked to here, you know where you are going and you see it coming, you work with it personally.

Lsd keeps your neat little package together yet you can still trip very hard. Lsd, I guess for me, is more self analytical, process oriented, geometric, and less cyclical, curved/limitless, undefinable and "out there"..... Basically its mindblowing in a whole different way. A way that is more based in this world and your "self".

Seriously though, I do also believe ayahuasca is something this guy would want to be VERY careful with. I know what it did to me and how it changed my life.

The schizophrenic I know that is not in my family knows alot about hallucinogens. He would STRONGLY agree with me. That is just another opinion though it may be the opinion of a schizophrenic(perhapse even more relavent)...

This is all just my advise, my opinion......
I guess Id just be careful with all of these things.

From what I've read and my general impressions, psychedelic experiences precipitate schizophrenic breaks not because of some chemical action, but because they are so intense they uncover latent schizophrenic potential. Many of the psychological effects of psychedelics are actually similar to symptoms of schizophrenia -- particularly the ego-dissolving aspects. Evidently, a bad trip is among the most traumatic experiences you can have. War veterans have all kinds of psychological maladies. Just imagine what a psychedelic can do if you have a negative experience.

I think LSD would be the one for him to be the most cautious of.  LSD is wonderful at inducing paranoia.  How old are you, dvol?  Some people only have their first pyschotic break in their early twenties.  Be careful, pardner.  And I wouldn't try anything until you hear from thedudenj.  He's a real life shaman, and a prudent individual. :hehehe:

They can all be bad for schizophrenics. I personally know a schizophrenic who knows hallucinogens like the back of his hand. He wont ever take another hallucinogen, but if he did it would be lsd.

Ayahuasca takes the cake though.....I shit you not. Im fairly certain this is not just my opinion. It mainly has to do with maois. Maois kind of seal the deal. It the most incredible hallucinogen I have ever tried, and it is so amazing that a schizophrenic mind might not be able to deal with its long lasting after effects. Sure, a low dose is a low dose, but ayahuasca changes anyone who takes a thick dose. Its mostly chemical. Its a life long experience.

But ya, Its debatable as to whether mushrooms or lsd are worse for schizos or potential schizos. All I know is my own experiences and more importantly, a good friend of mine who lives off of gov cheese because he is worse than most schizos. Lsd Is NOTHING compared to mushrooms for him. Mushrooms are VERY bad for him. Lsd is too, but he can almost see himself using it again before he dies.
