How to become a spammer?
    #6281979 - 11/14/06 12:53 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I want to send crazy propaganda to millions of people through email.

I just need a good cheap/free/stolen program for bulk email and a good source of email addresses.

Is it feasable to send out millions of emails through a particularly shitty 56k connection?

Spammers are selfish assholes.

HAHAHA... you are the Anarcho-Technologist, you figure it out.

If you are serious, then NO you cannot use a 56k connection. And a list of millions of emails will cost you plenty, not to mention the mail server and the management of said mail server.

Why don't you just post it here?

Spammers don't work that way.

As it happens, a 56K connection is enough for a spammer to send out hundreds of millions of emails. The way they do it is by writing and releasing viruses to the internet. Each of the infected machines reports back to the spammer when it becomes infected. When the spammer collects a million infected machines, they send out one message to each machine and each machine in turn sends out 1000 copies of the spam. It does so at a paced rate that won't alarm the user or the user's ISP. Many machines on the internet (my parents' for example) are currently infected with a dozen separate viruses, all of them functional email zombies owned by spammers. Anti-virus software cannot remove them once they're entrenched. You have to reinstall the OS.

Lots of cocky geeks think they can't get a virus because they "know what not to click on". They don't run anti-virus software (or don't keep it updated) because they're "too smart" to get infected. As it happens, these same geeks who are just smart enough to hang themselves are exactly the ones who most often get infected, usually because they spend a lot of time on porn sites that are virus honey pots for that exact, arrogant "it can't happen to me" mindset.

You can get these by simply visiting a web site. You don't even have to click on anything. Some viruses auto-infect even if you never view the email through assorted bugs in Outlook and other email software.

If someone you trust gets infected, the virus will email you a Word document or a picture without their knowledge. You get the document or picture from a known-person and so, thinking it's from a safe source, open it to see what's up. By doing that, you've run a Word macro or .jpg vector that infects your machine.

If you chill in IRC or other chat networks, someone can zap a virus onto your machine without you knowing through previously-unknown exploits in your client software.

Even the best anti-virus software cannot catch all of these because there is a lag between the time a virus appears on the internet and the time the anti-virus profiles are updated.

As for the mailing lists, since spammers steal their bandwidth, they can afford to canvas every registered domain with a thousand likely email addresses on the off chance that they may hit one. joe @shroomery.com, fred @shroomery.com, admin @shroomery.com, webmaster @shroomery.com, sales @shroomery.com and so on. They have all the time in the world and free virus-stolen bandwidth, so why not?

Spammers also harvest email addresses by spidering the web and looking for '@' characters. And finally, when they manage to infect some poor slop's computer, they scan that person's entire inbox and outbox and harvest the email address of every person and business that person has ever communicated with. That includes YOUR email address if one of your friends gets infected.

Anti-spam inbox filters don't work. If you set them aggressive, they will filter out legitimate email you need to get. If you set them lenient, they'll let spam through and you waste time deleting them, or worse, get infected when you open them to delete them. Even so, you have to periodically set aside time to look in the the spam filter box to make sure nothing got filtered by mistake, so you're back where you started wasting time sifting through shit you didn't ask for, don't want, and were forced to pay for. This is worse than Jehovah's witnesses interrupting my dinner and it sucks.

Spam accounts for the majority of the traffic on the internet. I've heard figures ranging upwards of 75%. And I'll give you one guess who has to pay for that stolen bandwidth with higher ISP subscription fees? Hint: it's not the spammers.

Spam sucks, and spammers more so.

Perhaps they don't work if you run your own domain. I have several very active Gmail accounts. So far, not one peice of spam has entered my mailbox, and not one legitimate message has been flagged as spam.

But your account IS targeted and the spam gets filtered to the spam box. You still have to go look once in a while and sift through the shit there to make sure you haven't missed an important email.

And while you may not rely on email for a living, many people do and can't afford to ignore the filtered mail because in the real world, potential customers' email does get accidentally filtered once in a while, and not replying can cost you a lot of money when a customer feels ignored.
