Workman, how do you achieve that bit of genius?

Far and away, one of the most useful hints I've gotten from this BBS has been from Workman--how he uses a 2" or so roll of plastic wrap to avoid contams for post-innoculated petri's. It's wrapped around the rim of a freshly innoculated dish.

Workman? How do you cut the little end off the plastic wrap roll? I'm thinking maybe a hacksaw?

Do tell!!

hehe... i've heard this tip as well... only from anno

he said to just use a sharp knife and chop off the end of a roll. also, don't use the Seran Wrap brand because the material used does not allow gas exchange. regular generic wrap (i forget the name of the material) is gas permeable, but will not allow contams to enter

I read about the method years ago, I don't remember where exactly. I didn't come up with it on my own. Cutting the roll can be difficult but I use a very sharp knife. I have wondered if a band saw with a fine blade would do a better job.

Anything else than a sharp blade will serrate the edges and make th plastics tear when applaying the foil.

i have also heard of teflon tape being used, although there were questions about the gas exchange. It seems like it would be simple and convenient.

Use a roll of electrical tape; perfect width for petri dishes.
