    #627034 - 05/11/02 05:22 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

How long can i wait until I inoculate my cakes? I havent received my spore syringe yet, and I was just wondering how long I could wait. Thanks

As long as you'd sterilized properly and there is no sign of contamination. You'll be fine.

cakes will stay good for quite a while. however, the longer you keep 'em around, the slower growth will be and the more contams you'll risk.

Well the bottom line is that, although you sterlized them, there's a pretty good chance there's at least a few viable contams left in the jar anyway. The mycelium usually takes over and kills a few on it's journey through the jar. By waiting to innoculate your jars, you're giving any contams a head start on the mycelium.

its no problem, its probably better this way, because if your sterilization was faulty youll find out before you waste spores. and you can always re sterilize them, right?

I'm a busy person and find I can't innoculate the jars the day after. I ususally innoculate about 4-14 days after the sterilization of the jars. I have consistently found that when I do this I only get about a 50% success rate. 6 innoculated jars will only produce 3 non contaminated cakes. I recommend the sooner the better, when it comes to innoculation. L8r.

What may I ask is your method of sterilizing the jars? Steamer, pressure cooker...?

To the rest who've found contams while letting jars sit, what were your methods?

I have had good experience and have high faith in pressure cooking...just wondering if my faith is a little too high. I've always assumed that any contamination in my jars most likely occurred after they were sterilized in my pressure cooker...but if some creature can live in radio-active water, perhaps some could survive pressure cooking.

Well my sterilization was just merely steaming. This probably presents the problem with loosing 50% of my jars. However, I think the small amount if any contams gets a chance to gain a stronghold on my substrate being uninnoculated for 1-2 weeks. When I innoculate the next day after sterilization, I have 100% colonization rates. I don't know. I really want a pressure cooker.

I do agree with your pressure cooker faith. If properly sterilized (A fully sterile environment) is attained. Nothing should grow in the jars while awaiting innoculation. I look forward to owning a pressure cooker.

Yeah, it's true. In this hobby, pressure cookers are worth their weight in shrooms! If you truly want to learn to cultivate, a PC (preferably in the 16qt+ range) is an absolute must.
Try checking out Ebay - you can usually find a good pressure canner for cheap there.
My friend reccomends the All American pressure cookers, canners, and sterilizers. They use a metal-to-metal seal, so there's no gasket to screw with - just two big hunks of aluminum.
