ID Request: Big Ole Mushroom
    #6276604 - 11/12/06 07:18 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

Found this big mushroom growing in the woods. It has to be the softest mushroom I've ever found, not brittle just soft like a nice pillow...

Habitat: Forest floor
Gills: White
Stem: White, thin ~1/4 inches
Cap: large ~4-5 inches, very very soft, picture shows things that I cant explain well
Location: North Florida

First picture is decent and shows the mushroom, while the second one is blurry it has a quarter for size comparison

someone lie and tell me its a cube just to make my day  :mushroom2:

Maybe some type of Lepiota?? Was there a ring around the stalk? Did you pick it so you can make a spore print?

It's definitely one of the Lepiotas, possibly Macrolepiota procera: The Parasol Mushroom. Another possibility is the poisonous Chlorophyllum molybdites, which is very common in Florida, but the woodland habitat and slender stem makes me suspect the former. A spore print will help you distinguish between the two.

"Macrolepiota procera, formerly known as Lepiota procera, is a very good edible"

neat! thanks for the links... from looking at the two I'm pretty sure its a the lepiota. Of course I'll still spore print it because of that poisonous look alike . Thats pretty neat though considering they grow large and abundantly around here.

What's a good way to prepare a "very good edible" ?

Make sure they are Macrolepiota procera as there are poisonous Lepiotas out there...

You can use Parasols in all sorts of recipes but I once prepared button Macrolepiota procera using this recipe and it turned out pretty good!

I posted a bunch of mushroom cookery vids in the Culinary Arts forum a week or so ago. Be sure to try the Portabella mushroom burger!
