Perlite lifecycle & proper disposal
    #627430 - 05/12/02 05:20 AM (21 years, 6 months ago)

How long will your perlite layer in the bottom of the terrarium last? And once the perlite is no longer useable what are the proper disposal methods for it? Is it biodegradable/safe to simply bag up and throw away in the trash?

Thanks.

Love & Light,

Boppity

perlite will last quite a while. throw in some H2O2 with some water to keep the contam issue settled. when you're done with your terrarium, you can just dry out/bake the perlite until it's dry again and re-use it at a later date. as far as disposal methods, bag it up and chuck it in the trash

Although it's true that you can sterilize and re-use your perlite, at some $3 a bad, I would reccomend just replacing it between terrarium uses..
Perlite is a natural product, and while it will probably not break down on its own (since it's non-organic) it's as harmless as throwing out a bunch of gravel - probably even less so.
