Policemen sue over marijuana burgers
Some might call it the ultimate happy meal. But two police officers in New Mexico were unamused to discover that the hamburgers that they were chomping had been laced with marijuana.
Mark Landavazo and Henry Gabaldon are suing Burger King, the fast food giant, alleging an array of offences from battery to negligence after they discovered the special ingredient in their takeaway meals.
The two officers, from the Isleta Pueblo tribal police, were driving their patrol car when they stopped to pick up food at a Burger King restaurant in Los Lunas, New Mexico.
They were half-way through their meal when they began to suspect the presence of an intoxicating substance on their burger patties.
After a field test kit confirmed that the extra ingredient was indeed marijuana, the pair took themselves to hospital for a check-up and further testing.
Sam Bregman, the lawyer for the two officers, said that their discovery gave “a whole new meaning to the word ‘Whopper’. The idea that these hoodlums would put marijuana into a hamburger and attempt to impair law enforcement officers trying to do their jobs is outrageous.”
But not everyone has taken the incident so seriously. The case has proved rich fodder for comedians, earning mentions by a series of late-night television talk show hosts, including Jay Leno.
Mr Bregman acknowledged that the incident “seems somewhat humorous at first glance”, but he said that the consequences could have been deadly serious. “God forbid these officers didn’t realise their burgers were laced with pot and then were called to a violent situation where they’d have to draw their firearms. Their lives were placed in danger.” A civil lawsuit has been filed alleging personal injury, negligence, battery and violation of fair practices. It seeks punitive and compensatory damages and legal costs.
Three Burger King employees — Justin Armijo, 19, Robert Nuckols, 21, and the restaurant manager, Joseph Ledesma, 33, — have been arrested in connection with a separate criminal investigation into the incident, which happened on October 8.
The three were indicted on charges of possession of marijuana and aggravated battery on an officer.
Officials of Burger King Corp refused to comment.

Their lives were placed in danger? If they had any sense, their stoned minds would have told them to go chill and watch a film or something. Anyway I thought police were aware that their lives are in danger anyway, being police and all.
