Can you like..forget how to sleep?
    #6273476 - 11/11/06 08:51 PM (17 years, 2 months ago)

I just can't sleep anymore, no matter how tired I am. I don't remember the last time I've

a.) fallen asleep on the couch
b.) done the "struggling to keep my eyes open" thing
c.) fallen asleep in under 45 minutes
d.) slept all night

I don't like it  :frown:  I need to learn how to sleep again because apparently I've forgotten.

Take sleeping pills. When you are going to sleep, turn off all distractions, and listen to relaxing music, like Bob Marley. That shit works for me.

I don't think you can forget how to sleep. It's something we've really known how to do since we were born. It's natural, really. It's like forgetting how to spit or cough or something. We'll never forget.

I'm interested in insomnia though. If one can really go so long without sleeping at all, and yet still maintaining a decently balanced life.

Anyway, have you slept at all lately? When was the last time you did? This is actually kind of new to me.

Have you tried meditating before you go to bed? It sounds like you could have anxiety and a racing mind that keeps your body in an alerted state, even when you're supposed to be relaxing and falling into unconsciousness.

Or, what always works for me: take a good 6 or 7 shots of some strong, 100-proof alcohol and just pass out. You won't be drunk (unless you have no tolerance), but you'll be nice and buzzed to fall asleep.

My sleep is weird sometimes...Tonight for example is the weirdest it's been in years. Don't feel tired, can't sleep really. So I'll sit here for a while longer.

how does one fall asleep?

i don't know how to explain, and i don't think it can be done.

falling asleep is much like waking up, it just happens.

how does one wake up?

spontaneously.

so any practical advice i can really give you is to investigate your habits. do your daily routines allow any time to be alone with your thoughts, hows your diet, when do you usually wake up, what drugs do you take, etc.

there's many factors to consider. sleep is one of the most basic bio-processes of your organism. the causes for the lack of it cannot always be narrowed down to one. you have to explore and see what works for you.

i would abstain from medication, i think it's best to work on this naturally and sober-minded. dependency on foreign chemicals to fall into dreamland is just an additional burden IMO.

change your lifestyle, travel, do something out of the ordinary, spice up things around you that can help you spend the energy required for your body to effortlessly enter a state of rest and regeneration.

good luck!

hope this helps.

:earth: :yinyang: :shineon:

I've decided that tonight I'm not going to sleep.
And I'm going to get out of this chair and start my day when the sun rises.
I do this from time to time.

My longest stretch without and sleep was 4 days. It's a trip.
Although the 4 day stretch was in very unusual circumstances out in the pine forests of Eastern Washington.

sounds to me like you dont get enough exercise. get your psyhsical energy out, you will feel so tired, lying down will feel good, and you will fall asleep.
Also, try to concentrate on the colors as yuor falling asleep.

I really don't see any colors when I lay down and try to sleep =/

I think it's closer to exercise since I get absolutely none. But my body does feel tired..or perhaps I think it feels tired since I'm not normally physically tired. Maybe I forgot what being exhausted feels like  Pretty sad I can say that..

well i would definately say when you wake up do really light exercise-nothing strenous at all, i find this gives me more energy throughout the day. Also exercise throughout the day. There are many things you can do... then after that you'll sleep

Yeah diet and exercise... now how you feel the rest of the day after exercise depends somewhat on your blood type, but give it a shot and see how you feel.

I don't know if I had insomnia, but it used to take me a very long time to fall asleep until I started exercising regularly. Exercise will become your best friend. However, I don't think exercise right before falling asleep is a good idea (I tried it myself because it seemed to make sense). Maybe 2 hours before you go to sleep, do as many push-ups as you can, as many sit-ups, and as many squats. Try to keep it consistent (if you can do 50 push-ups, do 50, and then eventually increase). When you exercise, you produce hormones and neuro-chemicals that make falling asleep quite difficult (your body puts itself into fight-or-flight mode, your sympathetic nervous system)

Also, someone mentioned meditation. This is great. You know how if you lay in bed too long, trying to fall asleep with a racing mind, it ends up becoming extremely frustrating and even more difficult to fall asleep as more time passes (at least, this is the case for me... I guess I'm assuming it's universal). Meditating for 10-20 minutes immediately prior to falling asleep will ensure that your mind is not racing (or at least not as much as usual).

If you don't want to meditate before falling asleep, at the very least try to not use a computer right before falling asleep, or engage in other stimulating activities. The more stimulated you are before falling asleep, the more difficult it will be to fall asleep.

i've been down there, tried all the excersise and whatnot, the diet changes aswell. it does make you more tired but that didn't do the trick. just about 5 months ago i realised that in a way i hate sleep. like the feeling of waking up well-rested is great and everything, but just on some level i hate sleep. Just too much happening every second that you are asleep that you are missing out on.

Anyway hope the excersise thing is the answer to your problem. For me at least it's time for a solo-shroom trip again. maybe looking deeper into the problem on shrooms will give me some insight.

And on a random note: it true that you can die if u spend 8 days without sleeping? Just heard it from a friend today and like...just sounded a bit over the top?

I don't think you'd die. Your immune system would probably be weakened quite a bit, which could cause some sicknesses, but I don't think they'd be fatal. Has anybody ever stayed up for 8 days!? That would be crazy.
Last night was the first night that I actually got a good nights sleep. I ran on a tread mill for a while and took some teylenol pms. I really don't want to take sleeping pills, but they do help. I think it's more of a psychological effect that they produce upon me. If only I could get a doctor to prescribe me some placebo pills, while convincing me they are the real deal!

I hate deciding that it's time to sleep.
Once I decide that it's late, and i've got shit to do tommorow, and its time to get into bed... it's over from there. I'm just setting myself up for hours of restlessness
But i loooove sleeping in. Nothing better.
Waking up, rolling over, burying my face in the pillow, and drifting off to sleep again. Having the best dreams. Being able to remember them.

lol.. it seems like I'm the same way. Telling myself to go to sleep because I have stuff to do or I have to get up early makes it even harder to sleep.

Yo, Fred. I'm glad that you found that setup. DDR is cool, though I always sucked at it. =)

Always be open-minded about trying new stuff. If there comes an oppurtunity to do other kinds of exercise, try that. You will find that having a variety is alot more fun than doing the same stuff over and over.

Sometimes all you need is a long walk to stay in shape. I think that walking + stretching is a really good way to go. Some nights, I walk with my dog (3-10 miles) and I come back home, shower, and stretch. You can try the same thing. I suggest not eating anything more than something like an apple and some water before you shower and stretch, though. I will post a stretching routine for you asap.

You may also find that having a long term goal for working out is a good thing for you. My goal right now is to buy a 40-75 foot length of rope so that I can tie it to trees and climb up. It takes alot of strength to climb up 30 feet of rope with skills (no strain because I do it with the correct technique) so I will have to train consistently for a while just to be confident about it. Another of my goals is to run up a 15 story building's staircase. That will take alot of work if I actually want to do that. Be on the lookout for cool stuff to try.

Scientists have conducted experiments where monitored patients stayed up for 10 days at a time. The world record is set by Randy Gardner, who stayed up for 264 hours, or 11 days.

Man, I would kill myself if I stayed up for 11 days. I can barely stay up for four or five days with the help of amphetamines. I can't imagine how anybody could stay up longer without the help of any drugs besides coffee.

maybe the reason you can't don't fall asleep easily is related to the fact that you don't want to sleep?

while there may be a lot happening that you're missing out on if you're asleep, you're going to miss out on a whole lot more if you can't rest your brain adequately to fully experience your life.

My sleeping pattern is no good. A few days a week I work well into the morning, and the rest of the week I get up around that time.

It's pretty useless, some days i'll get to work for a 12 hour shift having had 2 or 3 hours sleep, but mostly i'll get maybe 5 or 6 hours. Years ago I can remember sleeping 10 to 12 hours a day just because I could.

I can only offer bad advice, pot, beer, bed. It works when in a pinch.

Eat 5-6 meals a day to maintain an evenly burning metabolism throughout the day.. also, exercise as others have mentioned.
