A slight bit off the subject.

Years back, gnats managed to get in my positive pressure ventilated grow room.  :mad2:

I had a scrap GE industrial strength UV bulb & mount from a weird old 60's sterilizing set-up laying around. I mounted that in the metal duct work in the intake side of the ventilation system.

That ended the gnat problem.

It did not seem to kill them outright, as occasionally, I saw adults flying around. But, for sure, they did not reproduce in substrate trays, after that. I gather UV affects their ability to reproduce.

I wonder how?

maybe it fries their little gnatty bollocks

UV can be separated into various ranges, with short range UV (UVC) considered “germicidal UV.”

At certain wavelengths UV is mutagenic to bacteria, viruses and other micro-organisms.

At a wavelength of 2,537 Angstroms (254 nm)[3] UV will break the molecular bonds within micro-organismal DNA, producing thymine dimers in their DNA thereby destroying them, rendering them harmless or prohibiting growth and reproduction.

I gather it does, in some way render them sterile
