Re: UV Lamp sterilization? [Re: ohmatic]

i just posted about UV in the cultivation forum...someone was asking about using a tanning bed to sterilize jars  :crazy2: ...(i know!!!)  anyway here is what i posted back to him.  has some relevance here.  you just cant go buy a UV lamp and hope for the best, you have to get a certain lamp for killing germs.

the reason for PC'ing jars at 15 psi is just like davesj1 said so the steam can penetrate deep into the substrate. UV light as it does kill contams, would only do so on the surface area of the jar. IMHO the benefit of it is not worth the time. if you want to do an experiment with a jar that you dont plan to inoculate, i think you would see contams springing forth straight away. i could be wrong, although i am pretty sure in theory it would not work.

and i will explain further why i think it will not just so you dont think i am just some nay sayer

not all UV light kills germs, only UV-C Output of the ultraviolet spectrum at the critical 253.7 wavelength (254 nM) will kill the contaminants. "UV-C" takes in a very broad spectrum of wavelengths. And most wavelengths in the ultraviolet-c spectrum dont do much to either purify the air or kill germs. other wavelengths produce ozone. Only an extremely narrow band in the UV-C spectrum is actually useful to purify the air and kill viruses, bacteria, etc.

Tanning beds and sun lamps generally emit 93% to 99% UV-A radiation increasing the benefits of a tan. but doing nothing for the bacteria.
if sun lamps did kill all bacteria, it would probably be very harmful to be exposed to for any length of time. IMO

so i dont think you would see any good use of a tanning bed, i hope this clears a few things up for you. really you cant get much better than a steam sterilizer (PC) for what you need.

We have a little war going on here. I just heard an ambulance go around the corner. what will it be tonight? the son who kicked his mother down the stairs? the father who beat his wife to death with the telephone? the baby who got forgotten by his mother because the drugs were really good today? you never know. you never know and you never get to know unless it's you, and if its you, well, you dont want to know. ~Henry Rollins "Art To Choke Hearts"
