Some more photos
    #6265663 - 11/09/06 02:14 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

This thread is about mushroom photography. I'm not looking for IDs here (although any guesses are more than welcome!) Rather, I'm trying to open up some new avenues of use for the Shroomery: that of mushroom photography for aesthetic purposes. Most mushroom photography we see here on the Shroomery is mainly for documentation purposes: document your finds/grows in order to be able to share them with the community. However, in this topic, I'd like to emphasize another approach: photography for the sake of photography, but using mushrooms as subjects. I'm not pretending that the shots in this topic are all good photographs. They are mostly just some mushroom shots that turned out nice enough and that don't have too many flaws in them. However, in terms of composition, much work lies ahead of me. I think I made a start today.

Ok, so I went out today for a bit to try the zuropak-mushroom photography approach. The zuropak-approach is essentially photographing mushrooms using both available light and flash light. Previously, I would only shoot using one or two flash units because that didn't require me to carry a tripod around. However, there's one major drawback to that approach: using only some flash units of limited power strips the photograph of any ambiance it might have had.

The solution is rather simple: set the exposure on the camera in order to under-expose a bit (1 stop, for example) and light up the subject using a flash unit. Because exposure times at small apertures (needed for sufficient depth of field) will be long in the low-light situations where mushrooms often grow, a tripod is absolutely vital for the creation of sharp, high resolution images. So I've actually been a good boy today and I brought my camera, tripod, flash units, some lenses and some extension tubes to my local park and shot a couple of frames. Here are the results.

Inky caps (coprinellus sp.) I'm quite pleased with this image, although the yellow leaf in the left corner is a tad distracting. I shot another frame where I removed the twig right of the cluster, but I decided to stick with this version as it somehow adds some depth to the image.

A nice cluster of sulphur tufts (hypholoma fasciculare.) I like the scene in itself, but I don't like the lighting here. My flash units are simply too small to provide nice, even lighting on larger subjects. I'm not yet at the point that I also want to carry an additional tripod and umbrella around for one flash unit, so I guess I'm stuck for a while with this problem.

Unknown species on a rotting stump. In this image, the mixture of available and flash light is clearly visible. The shaggy texture of the stems would have been swamped in shadows without the use of a flash light. The depth of field is a tad too shallow.

Little Brown Mushrooms. Please remind me to remove some litter and leaves next time when I shoot something like this

I found the small specimen already pulled from the ground, so I decided to do a gillshot. I'd have liked to have another flash unit here to get some light underneath the big caps. Ah well, can't have it all.

Some more hypholomas, probably. I couldn't get nice light on those shrooms in the field, so I just shot a few frames and quickly walked on. Sitting behind my computer, I find that this image didn't come out very bad after all. It's mainly interesting composition which is lacking, from a technical viewpoint, it's good enough.

I spotted these little devils from a few meters away, due to their bright color. Their immediate surroundings provided for some nice compositions. I liked this one best. Exposure time was 13 seconds.

These were the most satisfying find from an aesthetic viewpoint. I just love that purple coloration! The moss and the beech leaves provide some impression of habitat and dimension. Bloody shame I forgot to remove the leave in the background, I find it distracting. Some darker colored out of focus area would have been better.

The only bolete I found on this trip. I never find many boletes in that area, so I wasn't really surprised. Especially because temps are getting too low for boletes anyway.

Dunno what these are, but these amiable twins caught my eye on my way home. I deliberately placed the leaf in the left corner in order to bring some variation in the left side of the image.

Well, those were today's mushrooms. I also shot a few images of the surroundings I was in. I'll add them for your viewing pleasure.

That's all folks, thanks for viewing and please leave a reply; any comments are welcome!

Very nice pictures! They look like they belong in a field guide

It's interesting, and helpful, to hear a little composition critique from someone knowledgable photography.

Inspiring. I hope you continue sharing your talents with us!

Cool idea and great pics!

What are you using for a flash? Its very soft and eye pleasing
And what macro lens do you use for your 20D?
I recently bought the Canon F2.8 100m macro for my wife and its fantastic. Zero sharpening required.

Hey koraks, these are great!!! I am honoured to have been given the term "zuropak approach". But I must be honest and admit that I learned the use of fill flash from many other pro avian photographers. It is a common approach in all styles of photography.

I haven't seen much of your previous mushroom photos, but these ones using the zuropak approach, are outstanding. My fave is the second one with the mossy log, leaves and hypholomas all over it. The leaves really add a nice mood to this image.

You will find as you use the ambient/flash approach that there are many more parameters that you can experiment with. The lighting options are really limitless.

Many of the species you have displayed above are also common here on Vancouver Island. Are you in the Pacific Northwest by any chance?  The Laccaria-amethysteo-occidentalis have not even bwegun to pop through the ground here yet. Are those shots of yours from this year? They are one of my favourite species.

Thanks for starting this thread. it makes me feel more comfortable about posting more of my images here now.  Perhaps I should just post them like you did and not worry about the ID request stuff. If someone wants to ID them, then it is a bonus. Who knows, maybe they will even consider a Mushroom Photography forum here

Great stuff man!!!  One question for you though; how are you guys inserting more than 6 images in your posts?? When I include images, it only allows up to 6. Can you tell me how you are doing this?

Cheers
Tim

Code:
[img]http://www.zuropak.com/Mushrooms-Button-3.jpg[/img]

will produce the result below, and the image is taken directly from your own website, without being uploaded here; make sure to remove any spaces when you type it in. I suspect there's no limit on the number of pictures inserted this way.

Only requirement is that your website allows "hot-linking" from other sites, which appears to be the case anyway. Just don't link to huge images as that tends to screw up the page layout for people reading the thread.

Sweet pics as always.

http://www.koraks.nl/galleries/plants_and_flowers/mushrooms/IMG_0035%20(4).jpg reminds me of a Galerina species.

http://www.koraks.nl/galleries/plants_and_flowers/mushrooms/IMG_0046%20(4).jpg looks like a Lactarius to me.

http://www.koraks.nl/galleries/plants_and_flowers/mushrooms/IMG_0068%20(4).jpg - possible Laccaria species? If it is, it's not one that grows in my area (if it does I haven't found it yet). I'd check it for a white spore print. Laccarias are one of my favotote all time edible genera.

http://www.koraks.nl/galleries/plants_and_flowers/mushrooms/IMG_0082%20(4).jpg looks like a Psathyrella. I have seen almost identical ones in my area. Did it have dark gills?

This is definitely a Laccaria species and most likely Laccaria-amethysteo-occidentalis

Thanks for the replies people! Your feedback really stimulates me to explore mushroom photography further.

@Pincushion: I use two flash units: a camera-mounted 580EX serving as master and a 420EX as wireless slave. As to the issue of glass: I don't own a dedicated macro lens, although I've come to the conclusion that I should invest in one. Currently, I mostly use a 24-70/2.8 and a 70-200/4 with extension tubes when needed.

@zuropak: Yes, just post your pics! If some remain un-IDed, well, too bad, but there's nothing wrong with just posting good photos you enjoyed making! As far as I'm aware, it's not compulsory to make a complete ID-request, at least not when you're just into sharing your photos. I always regard any successful ID's as a bonus.

@eris & zuropak: thanks for the hints at IDs, I'll check those species as soon as I get back this afternoon. First, I have this job interview at hand...

Thanks again for the heartwarming replies!
