hygrometer calibration

i put my shower on the hottest setting and steamed up the bathroom to see if my hygrometer would make it to 100% but it never went past 92%. i'm sure there was 100% humidity in the room because the water was collecting on me and beading down my body like sweat. does this mean that my hygrometer will always read 8% lower than the true humidity?

a good way to check it is to put it in a plastic bag with some salt that has a few drops of water in it, it should read right at 75%

Do you want to but a couple of drops of water in like a cup of salt or do you want to make it like wet salt? because i have it where the salt is like wet and you could drain a little water off it but its not disolving in it. Thanks for your help!

Wrap the hygrometer in a damp towel for half an hour. Unwrap and adjust the screw on the back so it reads 98%. RR

The salt method:
Take a small cup and put about 1/4 cup of salt in it. MOISTEN the salt and stir it. You want wet salt, not salt water. Seal that cup and your hygrometer in an air-tight vessel. Leave it there over night and the hygrometer should read exactly 75% RH. If not, you have to factor the difference in to your calculations.

sorry to thread hijack but I was wondering can salt substitute be used to test the hygrometer? The stuff I'm using is made up of Potassium chlroide, fumaric acid, tricalclium phosphate and monocalcium phosphate. Would the rh of this substance still be the same as salt when a bit of water is added? Thanks

Use the damp 'wrap in a towel' test. Salt does not give an accurate reading at higher humidity. RR
