fruit flies in jar
    #6266905 - 11/09/06 08:19 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

Today when I birthed my first Tek jar, a bunch (dozens) of tiny fruit flies came out as i was dumping the top vermiculite layer.

I'm fairly sure they're NOT fungus gnats because:
-they are brown, not black
-not thin
-do not resemble mosquitoes or pics of the fungus gnats found here:
http://www.shroomery.org/5283/Dealing-with-Mushroom-Flies
-have reddish heads

They don't look like typical fruit flies either cause they're so small, but maybe they're just not mature?

I've been reading a bunch of posts and still am unsure about what to do at this point. the birthed cake was introduced into the terrarium about an hour ago, but i'm not sure if it should be tossed and the whole terrarium cleaned.

what should i do??

It sounds like an adult gnat of some kind crawled through the holes in your lid and layed eggs in the verm barrier. If the flies were just in the verm, wash the cake well under the faucet and fruit as normal. If they turn out to be a regular problem, micropore tape over the holes will probably stop them.
