Use a high ratio like 1:2, see many awesome flushes with no diminished quality of fruits.

what does this mean? 1 part grain to 2 parts coir? or 1 part coir to 2 parts grain?

1 part spawn 2 parts coir.

I'm with ANNO...
My first coir grow I did a straw casing and straight WBS casing right side by side:
66g STRAW - 2 1/2 flushes then green
39g COIR 5-10% coffee - 2 flushes then green
47g WBS - 3 flushes then no room for it anymore no contam.

While this was not a scientific test I used 1 quart of spawn for each all around 1:3 spawn:bulk sub. And tried all things being equal.

I did however just make up 5 trays of coir mixed with hpoo instead of straw to see if helps cut back on contam that straw seems to bring sometimes and we'll see how it does!

coir is 'a revolution'? i thought it was an old news. I'm doing my very first shroom grow on coir casing. so far so good. i'm glad i took a big step.

I had no change to obtain poo anywhere, so I spawned my colonized popcorn(popcorn works fine) to coir with ratio of approx. 1:3.
Ph was taken care of and also added some spent coffee grounds to the coir with ratio 20%/80%.

First flush from three 1,5 litre trays cased with verm/coir/crushed hydrorocks(80/10/10) was 192,2g fresh. It's the best achievement that I have got, and the second flush seems to be doing ok.

Fruits were potent, even tough these genes tend to have mutations a lot.

More info in my journal.

No using it as a casing layer is the old news, after everyone found out its has so much nutrition as a casing that it overlays it got converted over to being used as a bulk sub,poo is still king though but I don't see myself using poo anytime soon seeing as how mush easier coir is to get and use:thumbup:

Everyone?
Who is everyone?

if you use 60/40 Verm and Coir...
or 70/30 Verm and Coir as a casing layer it will work just fine.

Overlay?

there is a huge misconception of what overlay is around there...
overlay isn't mild over colonization of the casing layer.

Anyone that is getting any kind of severe over colonization isn't taking care of their casing!~

Overlay is not the same as full colonization of the casing layer.
Overlay is when the casing layer has not only fully colonized, but the mycelium has matted up, forming what almost looks like a crust.
Overlay is very rare.
If you'll follow the basic casing teks, you won't get overlay.

A fully colonized casing layer means you either used too much coir in the mix or waited too long to initiate pinning....period!~

It is not overlay.

I have never experienced ~ so called "overlay".
I have seen pictures of it.
Where myc formed a hide like covering over a substrate.
How, it got that way, I don't know.
But, would surmise neglect, abuse, direct hot sunlight, or misted with hydrogen peroxide.

Doesn't true overlay turn a brownish/yellow tinge?

1 PF cake spawned to about 1 1/2 quarts of coir, added a couple tablespoons of CaCO3 but nothing else. After fully colonized, cased with Miracle Grow moisture control formula. Here was the first flush; the small ones ended up aborting.

After the first flush, too much misting was done and water was found to be flowing out from holes in the foil into the glass pan. Water was poured out for several consecutive days until there was no more. A week or so later a weak 2nd flush occurred:

The first flush wet was about 3oz. 2nd flush each of the 2 mushrooms weighed around 15 grams (total wet weight just over 1 ounce).
