sometimes i wonder if we aren't in a computer program like the matrix. either that or God gives us miracle substances. i will never understand glass or believe it is possible for sand, which you CANNOT see through, to be turned into something that is completely solid, and is see through. i mean, where did the things in sand that give it color and stuff go? NOWHERE. God just likes us and knows we like to be inside and have windows, but also keep warm in the winter.

Because it reflects light instead of allowing it to pass through. Glass reflects some light and lets some through (depending on what kind of glass).

Not a very good answer but I have to go to bed (physics test tomorrow). Take a chemistry class, its fun.

haha, glass is a liquid, man. thats why you see old houses and the windows look all ripley. thats the glass flowing doooowwwwnnn....

you cant see through sand because it has many many faccets.

take salt, for example. you have your table salt, and its white. then take a huge salt crystal and its opaque....

also, if you were to grind up glass, it would be white, merely becaue there is so much more refraction.

read a physics book, bro.

Because no matter what angle you look at it from, the opposite faces of the crystal are not parallel... and even if they were, your eyes are not small enough to actually see it on a scale where you could see through it.

Sand is also full of impurities that distort light even more than the scattered facets of it's surface.

If you were to make a scaled-up replica of a grain of sand out of glass, you couldn't see clearly through that either.

There's nothing mystical about it, it's not magic or sorcery or trickery. What is perplexing you about this is the same thing as what no doubt perplexed the cavemen when they first encountered fire... they just didn't understand it.

Actually glass is an amorphous solid. Just a small distinction. It does 'flow' over time, though.

As for the original posters comment let me just say this. There are answers to why you can see through glass and not through sand. Rather than defaulting to Religion as an answer why don't you pick up a chemistry book and prepare to be amazed. It's a beautiful world.

> alright but how come i can't see thru sand?

Two reasons:

1) The same reason you cannot see through a pile of broken glass.
2) Impurities in the sand absorb some of the light.

> glass is a liquid

Correct.

> thats why you see old houses and the windows look all ripley. thats the glass flowing doooowwwwnnn....

Incorrect. Glass in old houses looks ripley beause of the way it was manufactured at the time. They studied old stain glass windows in cathedrals that were build centuries ago, and were unable to find any evidence that glass has migrated, or flowed.

> well how come i can see thru glass no matter which angle i look at it from?

You can't... well, not without distortion of the light.

That really depends on the definition of liquid and solid. But yes, you can see it as a highly viscous liquid. You can also see glass as a different state.

I think the consensus of scientists about glass being a liquid vs an amorphous solid is strongly in the amorphous solid camp. Of course as Annom points out, liquid is a man made characteristic and can thus be defined as anything.

I think the whole idea of glass flowing over time comes from the urban legend that stained glass windows in old churches are thicker at the bottom than the top. It has been shown however that this is due to the process used to make them, not due to gravity over time. Glass does not flow at room temperature any more than wood or steel does.

Also, calling it a liquid does not imply you can see through it. Many liquids you cannot see through, like mercury.

yes, but i dont classify meercury as a liquid in my mind. i see it as a metal. and its only a liquid because its past its melting point.

also, the way glass window were made in a church would make them perfectly flat.

ill find the process llater, as its a bitch to type out.
but im gonna stick to glass being a liquid for now.

Liquid and metal are not exclusive things.  Nearly all substances can exist as a liquid.  Metal is a type of substance.  Mercury is only one of two elements that exists as a liquid at room temperature.

Good Luck, Id like to see that, so please post it.

EDIT- Here is a web page dedicated to debunking the glass flowing myth

http://www.glassnotes.com/WindowPanes.html

Quote:

It is worth noting, too, that at room temperature the viscosity of metallic lead has been estimated to be about 10 to the11th power, poises, that is, perhaps a billion times less viscous-or a billion times more fluid, if you prefer than glass. Presumably, then, the lead caming that holds stained glass pieces in place should have flowed a billion times more readily than the glass. While lead caming often bends and buckles under the enormous architectural stresses imposed on it, one never hears that the lead has flowed like a liquid.

I believe it

This isn't meant as a reply to the last post but it's just an addition to the whole 'liquid' versus amorphous solid debate.

What is an amorphous solid? It's a solid lacking a crystalline structure.

Why is glass a amorphous solid and not a amorphous liquid? Because the shear viscosity of glass is greater than a defined value.

Glass is, by definition, an amorphous solid.

Not to say it doesn't behave, resemble, or have traits that make it much like a liquid.
