Shelf life for tea
    #6259567 - 11/07/06 09:34 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

I was curious on how long tea (unspecific to species) can be safely stored for, how it should be stored, or ways to remove potential contaminants. I've tried to find this information elsewhere to no avail.

Thank you in advance.

the enemy of our psychedelic goodies in mushroom tea at least, is oxidation... which is caused by - you guessed it, oxygen.

a handy thing happens when you heat water though - the free oxygen dissolved in the water boils away.  as it cools though, some will naturally return, thus threatening your magical brew... :frown:

so while i can't give you an answer on shelf life specifically... i think if you want to store a pre-made tea, your best bet is to pour it into a container, nearly full to the brim so that there's little air in it, while still piping hot (this is key), and place an air-tight lid on it.  this will actually leave you with an oxygen devoid environment (and an effectively pasteurized one) that i imagine you could store under refrigeration for several weeks if not longer.  you might even consider adding a bit of abscorbic acid (vitamin C) which is an antioxidant - while i'm not sure its effectiveness, there's been some interesting studies using it in preserving psychedelic mushrooms - its known to even reverse the familiar "blueing" that happens when mushroom material has been bruised.

of course, if you're talking about tea leaves or somesuch, the trick there is complete dehydration and maintaining that dryness.  things don't just go "bad" on their own - they go bad when bacteria and mold start to decay and rot them.  a totally dry material is inhospitable to molds and bacteria.  its the same principle we use when we store our "cracker-dry" dehydrated mushrooms.
