Mushroom DNA Debate
    #6251512 - 11/05/06 09:13 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I had a conversation with a friend about Ringless Honey Mushrooms (Armillariealla tabescens) that “evolved” into a Pandora’s box of DNA debate. I thought I would pose the question here and see what you think. The debate was sparked when I commented on the on the incredible variation of the species due to it’s reproduction through rhizomorphs. I likened rhizomorphs to cloning. I likened normal mushroom reproduction to sexual reproduction. Mycelium from at lest two spores is needed to form a new fruiting body in most mushrooms. The question is this:

After 1000 reproductions in X species from F1 stock,

1000 Reproductions through “sexual” reproduction and

1000 Reproductions from “clone” (a copy of a copy of a copy…)

Which method of “natural selection “ (any viable reproduction) would be most like the original F1 stock?

I believe that the variation in this species found within a few miles is due to rhizomophs. I am guessing that it might also account for some digestibility issues in the Armillariella genus.

I was reading up on the Armillariella genus and a sentence just jumped out of the book!

"Actively growing rhizomorphs are responsible for glowing wood bioluminesce colloquially called Foxfire."

I must see this for myself at once! It's midnight and I am off.

No luck seeing foxfire. I guess it's just A. mellea that glows.

A. mellea is no longer a species. It has been split into around ten species and I was unable to find information on which ones glowed.

Here is a link on the subject of glowing mushrooms you may find interesting. There is info about the split in Armillaria toward the end.
