Here's my worthless-ass pooch examining the goods (don't worry... this is as close as he got). I'm hoping he'll sniff me out a cyan patch one of these days
take him cyan hunting, my dog caught on to what we were doing while morel hunting, by the end of the season he would take us to patches and loved hunting morels, instead of just chasing squirrels... i also hear that some people train dogs for hunting chantrelles... i figure if it can be done for coke, MJ, numerous other drugs as well as morels, chantrelles and just about anything else you can think of, why couldn't you train to hunt cyans, or any psilocybian mushroom for that matter. psilocybian mushrooms have a very distinctive smell, if you search the internet for scent training a dog, i'm sure you could find some methods that would work for teaching him the smell of active mushrooms... anyways thats a rant that has nothing to do with this all, i love your dog he's so cute... nice finds too, next time let him lick the amanitas, my dog always licks the amanitas, he never eats them just licks a few and it seems to get him off... granted my dog is a drug addict, i'll have to post pics of him hitting a joint sometime or tripping balls (no i don't give him mushrooms, he steals them.. and smiles...) I plan on teaching him to hunt them when we move to the pnw...
I love the loo of your muscarias, around here we have the yellower varieties which aren't near as sweet looking...

There are also the famous truffle hunting dogs and pigs!
I bet if you took your dog hunting, and everytime you found an active mushroom got really excited, and started petting him or gave him a little treat and let him smell the mushroom, he'd associate the smell of that mushroom with a reward and begin actively hunting. Make sure to only have him sniff the actives though, and not reward him for inactives, or he might not understand the mission. If actives are difficult to come by, you could even scatter a few dried actives around, then go "hunting" and go through the same process, cept with the strategically placed dried mushrooms.

I found a pretty big patch of Muscarias down the road from my school. I picked one and attempted to make a spore print but it barely dropped any. Is this common for Amanita Muscaria?

It might have been too young or too old a specimen. If it is too old, it probably already released most of its spores. If it is too young, its spores are not all fully mature, so they would not drop. Keep in mind, the spores are white.
