Agricultural Limestone
    #625048 - 05/02/02 04:15 PM (21 years, 4 months ago)

Hi, I have been wanting to try the 50/50+ casing tek for some time now. I was able to find all necessary ingredients for the casing mixture except for the crushed oyster shell. I was at a nursery/garden supply store and I found this stuff called "Agricultural Limestone". It caught my eye because it says "Neutralizes Soil Acidity" and "Corrects One of the Moss Causing Soil Conditions - Acidity". I know that this is the main purpose for the usage of oyster shell in the casing mixture. This Agricultural Limestone stuff also contains 21% Water Soluable Calcium, I know that calcium is also a purpose for using the oyster shell. Would it be possible for me to use this Agricultural Limestone in place of Oyster Shell in my casing mixture? Here is what it says on the back of the bag:

Calcium(CA) Total......................................21.60%
Magnesium(Mg)..........................................13.03%
Calcium Carbonate(CaC03)........................53.94%
Magnesium Carbonate..(MgC03)................45.36%
Calcium Carbonate Equivalent(CaC03).....109.03%

I'm not sure what the percentages mean, there' not much info on the packaging. The limestone is a fine white powder. Any help on this matter would be a great help. Thanks -EJ

Don't use it!
Magnesium isn't good for the shrooms.
I hope that somebody can fill me in to tell why,
because i cant tell you.

Ag or horticultural lime is useable (I use it), but you want to look for brands that have 2% or less Mg, which are not that hard to find.

Small amounts of Mg are tolerated, but 13% is too much, I'm afraid.
