Preparing Birdseed
    #624310 - 05/01/02 07:22 PM (21 years, 10 months ago)

Quick question on birdseed preperation:

Instead of adding water and birdseed directly to your jars and then PC'ing them, you can simmer them in water and then just add directly to jars.

Whats the method on simmering the birdseed...Temperature, time, water to birdseed ratio....??

soak overnight
drain
jar
pc 45-60 min
DON"T COOK THEM!

sorry to yell, I just keep hearing about poor mycos messing up their birdseed on the stove. you don't wanna cook it, just hydrate it and sterilize it. soaking overnight not only hydrates the seed fully, it also hydrates all those nastly little endospores. The ickies germinate, making them more vulnerable to death by pc.

Wow, never even thoght about just letting them soak. THats a good idea. I thought that the heat would make them soak the moisture more, but, is this not the case?

If you need to go from dry seed to pc in a short amount of time, then low heat would be neccesary; it speeds up the process.  But the way I see it, let the damn seeds decide how much water they wanna hold.  Stir them a few times over the course of the day and you'll notice the water level dropping and/or dissapearing - it's in the seeds.  You might have to add a little more.  Oh yeah!  cover them babies while soaking to protect from evaporation.  And if you leave'm too long, they'll sprout (not for 3 days or so).  Umm...  I think thats all I got for now.  Hope it works for you!
