Perlite used in large grow rooms

My hampster's friend recently innoculated 60 jars, and he's going to pack a crawl space with about 10-15 fruiting chambers. My question is this: could he just put the perlite in a separate container in the crawl space, or does he have to put the perlite in the substrate that the fruits will eventually grow on?
He wants to keep the humidity up because this room is relatively large for a terrarium.

put the prelite in the fruting chambers......1"to 2" on the botem of the chambers with about 1" of h2o2 in the perlite
