While fine verm is ideal for casing mixes, I've found that coarse verm is more beneficial to PF cakes. It keeps the mix loose and helps speed colonization.

Hydro stores sell a pretty fine grade vermiculite and it's all I've been able to use lately. It works ok, but I'd like to find a courser grade. Where did you find yours?

I go to local Mom & Pop garden shops and to Home Depot. The Home Depot occasionally sells huge 50 lb bags of it, medium/coarse grade.

winter is a great time to find a coarser grade of vermiculite, check lowes and
home depot in the section with heaters/fire place accessories, they sell it for
the gas log fireplaces.

thats a pretty damned good price for shipped, it's light but bulky, usualy shipping is a killer because of the size...

I live near a company that distributes the stuff, they sell to horticulture, construction and other trades, picking it up is extremely cheap, about $32/ton
