Help w/ birdseed?!!?
    #620078 - 04/27/02 12:54 AM (21 years, 11 months ago)

I followed the beginning of Mycofiles birdseed prep instructions. I added birdseed to hot water and simmered/boiled for 30 min. Is boiling bad? For 10 minutes the birdseed was boiling. This is what I got when I was finished. Notice the exploded seeds. Are there too many? How does this look?

Some exploded kernels are ok, but this looks like there are MANY......
You can still use this by adding 20% vermiculite to it(might add a tad water to it, depens on how moist teh resulting mixture is).

I see that you have white millet.Everone has a different tek.
It does look like there are to many that have opened.
Try 250ml millet and 130ml water 15 psi 60 minutes.
Don't have to boil or nothing.Give it a try see what works best
for you......

Yea, the white millet (50 pounds) that I had popped really easily.
I finally found 2:1 with a dash of gypsum was good...
I finally got so pissed at the stuff that I milled it into flour to use in small 1/2 pint "PF" jars.
It works soooooo well that way.
Now that the bag is gone, I dont know if I will screw with it again.
I DO like the flour, and it is cheap, but Arrowhwad Mills sells millet flour if I need it that bad.

My friend has used millet quite a bit as well, and overall was never impressed with its performance. He plans on using dung/straw/verm as substrate from now on.

My millet has still not dried out. I put it in a broiler pan outside. This picture is more representative of the consistancy of millet. The last picture was taken of a spot with a lot of bursted seeds.

Joshua,

how much does the millet you purchased cost, and where would I buy it in 20lb+ quanities?
and you purchased hulled millet, (with the shells on?) correct?
unhulled = bad? (if I remember your previous post)

any info appriciated,

i never used millet exclusively, but for birdseed in general:
soak 24 hours
drain
load your jars
sterilize (too long and you'll still get some mush)

you don't wanna cook it, just hydrate it and kill all the nasties.

A pointer on replies...reply to the person you are wanting to reply to. You just replied to Anno. I have e-mail notifications that tell me when someone replies to one of my posts. This helps me to respond to replies in a timely manner. It'll make sense w/ time.

Anyway. I got a gallon of white millet for $3 at a local wild bird shop. I estimate 1 gallon to be enough for approximately 12 quart jars filled to 3/4. I think if I asked the shop I could get it in larger quantities. Yes, with hulls is best. The hulls help to contain the softer seed material and allow shaking w/o sticking in clumps.

I'd have to go with Alien on this one, If working with millet I'd soak for 24 hours then drain for fifteen. I just don't like the look/feel of it after heating in simmering, or near boiling water to hydrate. I've never used it like this, though have prepared it as such on more than one occasion only to be thrown out for my not feeling right about it. The only problem with soaking I've found is the fermentation(?) and sprouting of seeds if something comes up causing you to leave them soaking for a couple days or more.

this guy i know just puts it (birdseed, not millet only) in a big pot on almost the lowest heat setting (still enough to be warm) and lets it go for about 3 or 4 hours, after he has stirred it several times and strained it under running water until the water is almost clear (this gets out all the bird-kote and nasty shit), he puts it all back in and lets it go on the burner while he prepares his pc to cok it. he lets it drain in the sink for about 30 mins agitating it to get all the water possible out of it (couldnt hurt to let it sit a bit longer) he loads it in quarts and cooks it at 15 for an hour. he has found FAR less contams this way (mainly bacterial was happeneing) than just putting it in and cooking it, water content is also more reliable.

Workman's recipe works good- My buddy uses 250ml of millet, 60ml of Quinno,
40ml of armarinth, 200ml Wheat piss, & Gypsum. He had three seperate pie tins with 2 using penningtons finch seed, & 1 with this formula.-This tray using above formula outperformed the finch seed-more flushes & weight using trs. When preparing Dont let them sit in the Jar for more then two days- Recently he lost a 12qt jars possibly b/c they sat to long.

Side Note: Thanks Anno - Nxt time he will presoak for 16hrs...

I think its also important to wash after soaking for 24h because there is obviously a lot of microbial growth. I know someone who has consistantly had zero contams this way.
