First frost death of Liberty caps or not?
    #6237973 - 11/02/06 06:41 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Hi there ive read mixed thoughts on the whoe idea of the first frost bringing the liberty caps season to an end.

Some places say the first frost stimulates them to grow, and others say that its pointles to go hunting after the first frost.

I had a big day of picking planned today, car got and all, and the first frost came out of no where last night!!

Just want to know for sure if the lovely things are gone for a whole other year, or if there is a point to us going picking today.

Many thanks,
Coz.

Well as of now I'm not 100% sure the field I went picking in were liberty caps but if they were then I can strongly say that NO, the first frost will not end the season! A series of consecutive frosts that last all day, however, might bring the season to an end.

One night below zero is no problem, but two or three (or more) in a row makes them stop growing.

...i agree with wot everyone else said...

the odd frost isnt too bad, but prolonged periods of frost will kill em off.

ive never actually bothered to go picking after we had frosts, but i will this season and see wots happening.

I just went picking today and only found 2 scrawny liberty caps has this season been a bad one? have i left it too late? last year i went picking on the 26th of October and nearly filled half a shopping bag. How long is the window of opportunity for liberty caps? i live down Hampshire BTW.

If you have a field full of liberty caps like i do, then you would know full well that its best to keep an eye on them. Any frost is no trouble, but the snow is. I have witnessed many frosts this year in england. I personally would not waste my time sniffing around for 1 or 2 libs. I have a trust worthy harvest to last a life time, and if i was to see the odd young picker coming along and pulling a lib out of the ground without cutting the stem above ground level, then he deserves to be punished.

it's not against the rules, just considered bad form to drag up threads that died long ago.

Unless you got any spectacular new discovery to add to a moldy old thread, it's generally considered bad practice to bring it back to life on any message board, not only the shroomery. Old threads should be used for reference only, for example, if you have a question that's already been answered in a thread two years ago, it's cool to find your answer there, so you don't have to open a new thread and ask the very same thing. It's not so cool, however, to post in the old thread saying that it answers your question.

No body made up any rules, stop whining about others telling you how it is on here.

Its annoying to see NooBs bump old threads thats all and anybody who has been on here for a minute will say the same thing, just start your own then nobody will flame you:shrug:
