    #6234208 - 11/01/06 08:33 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Recently someone tried to log in as me ,and even requested a password ( the option where the forum mails you an alternative code). Apparently the person wasnt able to log in as me but still it worried me...

Did anyone else have that happening recently?

Maybe i was just a random target...

Your opinions on it?

The intruder doesn't seem to be very skilled at what he's trying to do. Anyway, first off, download some anti-spyware / rootkit / virus apps, disconnect from the net IMMEDIATELY and scan all your partitions. Remove all the garbage (if any..) and then change ALL your passwords if they are the same or similar.

Tips for a secure password:

NO dictionary word (not even in a Yiddish or Arabic dictionary).

Use capitals AND numbers AND try to use a symbol like ! @ #. I personally always use ^ or * in my passwords.

Make your passwords at least 8 characters long.

Don't use anything obvious. You wouldn't believe how many times I "cracked" passwords just by trying out the person's birthday, phone #, name, etc.. for example one guy who was from Bangladesh had "BD" as his WEP key and "bdadmin" as his router password. I got the latter right on my first guess.

Misc tips:

Never click any link in your email. It's very easy to spoof email addresses and most people just click a link in their email and then login. What a spoofed page will do is record your login info and then redirect you to the right page so you won't have a clue that anything malicious took place.

For example, you might get a "click here to re-activate your account. We had a system failure yesterday", or "somebody requested a forgotten password, click here for more information", etc.. it can be anything. Don't click the links. MANUALLY go to the page in question. When it comes to computer security, you don't want to believe your eyes either.

Use the latest version of Firefox or Opera. Stay the fuck away from any version of IE, forever.

If you run any server(s) on your computer, make sure they are patched and up to date at all times. This is crucial! the only time I got hacked was because I was too lazy to upgrade my kernel (Linux). Fortunately the hacker was nice enough to warn me about my vulnerability . If it had been a black hat I would've been fucked .

Thanks for all the advice, i already implement all of it (except from the one with the server on my pc since i dont have one).I tend to keep up to date with security issues ,like having programs monitoring live my computer for viruses and keylggers and generally i excersice common sense in what i download and on what i click.

Hmmm i didnt piss of anyone lately,to tell you the truth i even had a long time to post something on this boards.Maybe it was a random try.Indeed the person was not skilled at all, he just tried small time methods to retrieve password...I run a check on his IP and it was somewhere in the States,im not from there,so the person is quite propably someone i do not know IRL...

Hmmm we will see how it goes.

Thanks for advice!
