Just got a Juuls Giant cutting
    #6221214 - 10/28/06 03:05 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

So I ordered a Juuls Giant cutting from BBB. It seems to have lots of scarring, at least I think its scarring. How can I be sure that it is a Juuls giant? I'll get a picture up asap. If anyone has some pictures or links that will show me what an established juuls giant looks like, that would be great.

Wow! I must've missed that, some how. BBB with TJG's. Normally, I wouldn't quite trust their sources and identifications, but if it looks like the above... good times.

Nevermind. Is this what you got?

I've never had a Juul's before, but I've never seen one that looked at all like that. Looks nice, either way. Very macrogonoidian.

i have one and it looks nothig like those. it has short spines but i know that there are juul hybrids that look like that going around. they are peruvian or bridgesii crossed with juuls giant.

which is not a juuls giant but is pretty close. on my san pedros and peruvians they have a blueish color to them and my juuls is more of a greenish color

Koala, no that was what I was expecting, but what I recieved doesnt look anything like that. What I recieved looks just lot like the picture Corporal posted, except its pretty roughed up, lots of scars and callous's. Its got six ribs and is the same color as the picture corporal posted. Its about 4-5 inches thick.

Again, I plan on getting a picture tonight. I dont have a digi, but my home boy does and Im going over there.

The above picture is definitely not a Juul's Giant. Furthermore, it doesn't look like a hybridized type of JG.  I have a couple Juul's Giant hybrids, and a "pure-bred" one.  I've noticed that the spines stay pretty small on all the JG crosses.  I'm also skeptical about BBB's sources.

Why are you skeptical about BBB's sources, do they have a bad reputation? I have heard mostly good things, and have had only good experiences. The cactus they sent looks just like the one Corporal Kielbasa posted. It has short spines, the same coloring. I took pictures over my friends, I should have them posted pretty soon. Im just waiting for him to email them.

That picture isnt what I received, what I received looks just like what you posted. What I got looks nothing like the picture on BBB. Just wait for me to post the pics I took, then you can tell me.

To be honest, I'm just always a little skeptical about labeling plants.  If BBB claims it's a Juul's Giant, their assertation is probably more reliable than anyone else's.

As for characterizing a plant just based on one picture of one specimen- I don't do it.  Too many individual plants of a known species will vary to make ID'ing them like that reliable.  Within the Trichocereus genus, it's commonly difficult to distinguish certain species.  If what you have IS a Juul's Giant, then it's not even it's own species, just a variant of T. Pachanoi and as such it will share San Pedro characteristics.

With my plants, I leave them with whatever labels they came with.

Was just about to say that. I do know that they operate their own cactus growing, but they grow from cuttings that come from various sources (even among the pachanoi, from what he told me). So, it would seem logical that they're dependant on the labeling of their providers.

Maybe their website guy messed up, but if anyone with supposed cactus knowledge hosted the pic and labeled it Juul's, I'd be very hesitant to shop there again.

Apparently their bridgesii are often very ugly and beat up, but I've heard they can actually be quite the force.

And, obviously... never buy a peruvianus from BBB. Sure, cuzcoensis can be nice to look at (the most you'll get out of these cacti)... but not for the prices I've seen on that site.
