Jar Exposure
    #6204457 - 10/24/06 01:07 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Is it ok for jars to be in indirect sunlight while they are colonizing? I coming on week two without seeing a bit of colonization. Allow me to register my disappointment. I was told it might be because I used fine grain vermiculite which needs less water than the usual PF Tek recipe. Any thoughts?

Two weeks and no colonization at all,I fear that you may have gotten a bunk syringe,If you got if from a shroomery vendor they will replace it for you and if you got it somewhere else than chock it up as a loss and order from a vendor next time

Well thats the thing I just kind of left them out so they were in the light during the natural day but it wasnt direct sunlight. Mostly natural lighting. Is there any 'trouble shooting' I can do?

Oh I forgot to add...I actually injected the spores into the dead center of the jar so Im worried I might have gotten partial colonization but I cant see it. Also it's the B+strain which I was told might colonize slower than most.

Dead center doesn't help. Instead of four inoculation points next to the glass, so you can see whats happening, you put just one in a blindspot. That could be part of your problem if not all.

Im using B+ and its not slow at all for me. But my methods might differ from yours

Your jars must be in absolute darkness while they are colonizing. It's ok to check on them in indirect light every couple days or so.

The only kind of verm I can find around my area is fine grain, and I've never had a problem with it. Make sure you're keeping them between 82 and 85 degrees or so.

Are my jars dead at this point or caan I throw them into darkness and expect them to inoculate?

put them in a dark closet or drawer for a week or two. then go back and check on them.

in my experience, exposing colonizing jars to light has minimal effects on mycellium growth.
and no, you can't put them in the darkness and expect them to inoculate, you can hope that they colonize, but 'inoculation' is actually injecting the spores into the jars.
how did you sterilize your needles when innoculating? if you used a lighter or flame it's possible you didn't wait long enough for the needle to cool down before injecting.

Nonsense. I have worked for years to dispel that myth. Normal room light has no effect on colonizing mycelium. Darkness can be used for a few days prior to birthing or introducing to fruiting conditions if a cased substrate, but from spore germination, to that point, light is irrelevant.
