Would you do this?
    #619204 - 04/26/02 07:44 AM (21 years, 11 months ago)

Ok, I inoculated 3 myco bags about two weeks ago. Only 1 bag shows signs of growth. Now I have several 1/2 pint jars that are colonizing nicely. Im thinking about PC'ing one of the nonproducing myco bags, cutting a slit in the side and sliping a chunk from one of my jars. Good or bad idea?

Just a couple of thoughts,
I wouldn't cut the side. If I cut it, I'd cut the top. The reason I say this is because when you harvest, you cut the top, then fold it a couple of times and reseal it with paperclips. (In my case anyway.)
Here's another idea,
You could steralize a straw, push it into a cake and twist it. This will remove a chunk that hasnn't been exposed to air. Poke a little hole in the bag, insert the straw, and push out the chunk with a clean chopstick. It might be worthwhile to shave a little from the top of the cake, before removing the chunk. You could do this a few times. But be very careful! Don't want to loose a bag.
Good Luck!

umm...i have myco bags from sporeworks and asked psilocyber if they could be re-used and was advised that it was not advisable to resterilize the bags. you might want to ask the vendor you purchased your bags from first before resterilizing them.

Nothing against psilocyber, I like the guy, but if I was selling
bags for 10-15 bucks a bag, I'd advise you not to reuse them
too.
My bags are from sporeworks. I'm sure my substrate isn't as
good as the original was but there they go again.

Well I said what the hell and did it. I was worried at first but after looking at it this morning my stomach has settled. It took like a bastard, its actually growing faster than it was in the jar. Now Im worried about contams. Im treating this one with special care, ie. singing to it, letting it watch TV, burping it.

Did you end up PC'ing the bags/resterilizing before you introduced the new Mycelium?

Update [Re: The_Ankh]

No, I did not pc before transfer. I did the oven tek, sterilized my tools in an alcohol flame and worked swiftly. I cut a slit in the bag with a steril scapal, placed the chunk and then used regular masking tape to close the hole.

My webcam happens to be the biggest peice of shit this side of the equador(for real), but this myco bag is almost rock solid, no loose substrate at all and not a bit of contams. Hard to tell from the pic but alot of pearly white poking through. If you plan on doing this PM me and I'll give you steps I took before doing this.

ALSO! Do any of you think I should take this out of the dark or let it incubate a little longer?

As bad as I hate to,
Unfortunately, I have to take back what I said in my reply
above.
I tried my best, to take the precautions I thought would work.
They almost colonized completely, over 80%, then turned
green in the uncolonized spots.
I cost myself some supplies, but I learned something. They just
worked so great the first time, I couldn't resist trying.
Psilocyber was right, I should have known that.

Wow very nice pic! Thanks for rubbing it in. LOL

I guess I let mine incubate a little longer.
