Cakes and casing?

I don't understand the difference here. I believe I've read that you "don't have to case", you can just use cakes...What does that mean? What is "just making cakes"? Thanks...

Cakes are fully colonized jars of mycillium. Casing it refers to crumbling the fully colonized cake into a larger size pan and covering the mycillium with any number of mixtures (compost, soil, cowshit) posted here. This gives you more surface area to grow shrooms and a larger crop for that matter. Check the FAQ's and read some more posts. My neighbors pet midget spent two months reading here before trying anything on his own. Good Luck!
