Excitement!!! Update!

I tried growing over five years ago. I didnt fully understand the importantance of humidity then, and my casings died a horrible, needless death.
Now armed with the proper knowledge and the fine guidance of peeople here, I felt a certain pride and excitement when I opened my FC this morning to fan my three dunked cakes. To my surprise every one of them were bright white, fuzzy, and very lumpy.
I wish I had a camera to show you all. I just had to share my excitement with someone and I can't really tell anyone, now can I?
Thanks to all of you who help here!!!

Well i birthed the cakes because I needed some sort of instant gratification. I have two casings coming along nicely, but i have a birthday coming up and wanted something I could celebrate with. Plus I should have some experience in both right? I checked after fanning tonight and the cakes are looking great, lots of little knots where Im guessing pins will appear.
I do plan on moving up and out in my operation, but didn't want to go all out and fail, needed something to boost my confidence and show me that all the patience I've paid in is worth it.

Good plan, and definitely congratulations on your success! I know that when I saw my first pin, it was instantly an awesome day. To know that all my work and especially patience had finally given me something in return. It's very gratifying. Good luck man, and welcome to the shroomery!

So here is a pic of my one of my cakes...sorry for the shitty res, this is a camera phone - photoshopped it a bit to make it easier to see. It is very fluffy in places with many little knots or bumps. No heads forming yet. They were dunked in the fridge for 24hrs and been in the FC for three days. They looking relatively alright??

Just be patient, and don't handle your cakes too much, just leave them in the FC and let them do their thing. You'll get better results that way.

I dont handle em except just this one time, I took a shower, then washed my hands again, and picked it up oh so gently.
I want to move on to bigger better things, but Im not big on jumping into something head on without a little experience under my belt. Grain to poo to greenhouse, huh? Point me in the direction!!!

Question about grain - I was thinking of using popcorn - like this Popcorn Tek with Pics . I notice that you shake it up every once in a while. So when fully colonized, it just pours out?

I have never used popcorn but I have heard not so great things about it,I did make up some bags of cracked corn though and got some OK fruits though,I have also used wild bird seed and rye with rye being the best in my experience hands down,Wild bird seed is OK but sometimes it is difficult to get the moisture content right and the myc wont colonize clumps that are stuck together if it is too wet.Any grain should be shaken at least once when it is around 20-30% colonized to speed things up.And once it is fully colonized it certainly wont just fall out and you will more than likely have to stuck a spoon or something in the jar to loosen it up before you can shake it out because it practically becomes a solid mass with all the myc holding it together

I use a 30 galllon air pump running into a Tropic Aire Humidifier then into my 22 gallon FC - Humidity stays at 100% for me.

hmm....my cakes are 6 days running. Cases are three days, one other six days. Just minor sightings, little head in a spot or two. Hopefully just the beginning of a wonderful pinset!!
I have to say the I dont believe my casings will be great. They were made with just sterilized straight verm, so they'll probably be a little slow. How were yours done?

My first grain experience was popcorn and was an unmitigated disaster. The stuff was chocked full of endospores and as much as I tried to kill them through excessive soaking, rinsing, and pcing, they somehow managed to survive it all. Don't ask me how. Ditto for wheat berries. That's why I'm sticking to rye. No problems yet. Soak, rinse, and pc and those rye berries will love ya back.
