Deadly Look-a-like

I drove out to my patch of thousands today to check for Psilocybe caerulipes, but found none.
Instead I found the place overrun with deadly Galerinas.
There was post a while back asking if deadly galerinas were hygrophanous. You can see from the last photo that Galerinas change to a lighter color as they dry out as is common with hygrophanous Psilocybes. Also note the pointy nipple on some of the specimens. The prominent umbo which is common on many species of psilocybe could also make one think he found magic as he held death in his hand.
These were growing in a patch known to produce large quantities of Psilocybe caerulipes. Every Psilocybe hunter should become very familiar with these deadly mushrooms.
Edit:
More photos from precious years added.

Ahh, nice edit! I remember you telling me that you had mistakened the last specimens for Gymnopilus yrs past. Heh, so now you've got Galerinas looking like Psilocybes, and Galerinas looking like Gymnopilus, NICE!

I've been finding marginata alot lately and years past.
They seem to be quite common and coincidentally common near choice actives.

I was out in the woods a few days ago and saw a ton of Galerina too. They seem to be on the the few things still out there on wood right now. The only other mushrooms I saw on wood were Pluteus.

Here are a few more photos of this highly variable mushroom.
These things can get really big, and when they do, they look like big Laughing Gyms. I thought this one was G. spectabilis when I first picked it.
They can also get quite pointy. check out this little gal.
These doppelgangers are by far the most common woodland mushroom in the late fall and winter. All psilocybin mushroom hunters should be very familiar with this species in all its elegant forms.

Hi ShroomyDan, I just wanted to tell you I appreciate your post. This is a very responsible thing you have done here, since there are so many users that come to the site for references and trust your judgements. I've actually found a couple patches of these, or something very similar, recently, but i wasnt sure what they were. My instincts told me to leave them in peace however, which is good. Well even if I did take a sample I know better than to eat it, but I have dogs and accidents do happen. Anyway, I ramble, Thanks for the tips.

Nice posts and pictures lately, all of them. What would you say the biggest giveaway to keying galerinas is?

Aside from their general appearance, look *closely* at the stem. The stem is one of the most important features for identifying this mushroom. A good, very similar mushroom to compare is Kuehneromyces mutabilis.
Happy mushrooming!

Thanks for the compliments. I'm trying to learn how to use this camera, and every now and then I learn a new trick.
Here are some more photos of these seductive little killers.
