Ignore Them - They Will Grow!!

I work with spawned straw and bird seed, lately I've started mixing cow shit in there, too. When my straw colonizes, I case and put to fruiting right away. I don't incubate for the casing to colonize, just cold shock overnight and let 'em grow. I usually have pins (not full grown mushies, though) within 10 days. Last weekend (probably Friday night) I put a batch of freshly cased substrate on the front porch to cold shock, and forgot about it. Yesterday morning (less than 6 days later) I looked over and saw the box. When I brought it inside and opened it, I had a nice batch of puertos ready to HARVEST!!! Meanwhile, several other boxes done 1-3 days before that one are just pinning now. Those boxes got all the tender loving care I could throw their way. The box that got ignored, grew fat, healthy, weighty mushrooms that looked beautiful, in SIX DAYS. What a trip!!

Nice Job! Most of the worlds greatest discoveries were made quite by accident. It would probably be time well spent to make a note of this pasts weeks weather. What climate do you live at? This might only work in the spring and fall. But still that's killer! Free Spore Ring

I'm in SE Florida, and the weather has been warm but fairly mild. I think we might have hit 90 at least once while my box was outside, but our nights are still fairly cool (upper 60's, maybe lower 70's?). I haven't watched the weather channel in days, so that's a guesstimate. When I pulled the box inside, I noticed it had more visible humidity in it than any of the boxes I had in my bedroom. One more observation - I moved my drying fan into a room separate from my boxes a couple of days ago to get away from the 24/7 NOISE and noticed an immediate increase in the amount of humidity my boxes began retaining right after the move. Guess the fan was drying out the whole room. I'm waiting to see if I notice any improvement in pinning/fruiting, but it hasn't been moved long enough to tell. Just a thought - if anyone out there is having humidity problems, and running a drying fan in the area - maybe this could help. ymmv - I live in a naturally humid (I mean HUMID) environment.

Yep, this discovery could have saved me hella trouble back in the beginning. I had a terrible retaining enough moisture for my cakes - less of a problem since I moved on to bulk substrate & casing. Turning off my ceiling fan might have saved me a lot of hair-pulling last year!!

Good News! My best friend used to live in West Palm and picked shrooms everytime it rained, all summer long! Speaking of Fla, if you haven't, you should check out http://www.jug-or-not.com/shroom/ It's a really cool site! Free Spore Ring

The extra humidity in the box left outside is due to the diurnal day/night temperature differences. This heating and chilling of the box is the way orchids grow. They cool at night and then when the warm moist morning air hits them it condenses the water vapour. The bigger the temperature difference, the better they grow. These mushrooms were subjected to the same condensation. Any place that gets air transfer will condense, even the inside of jars. I have read somewhere on the forums that recommended dropping the night temperatures for mushrooms but it isn't a common practice I don't think. Maybe it should be.
