A very surprising Nameko third flush
    #6187837 - 10/19/06 10:20 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

After got 2 good inside flushes, I've decided to try the block outdoor, in one of my trenches, without is protecting bag. The result is incredible. Got 544 grams on a third flush. So this block gave me 1128 grams of Nameko on an original 2951 grams sub. block!!
This can be done if the temp. outside is lower than 14C. Higher than that you can face few different problems.

The photo is dark but you can see anyway.

My P Nameko blocks colonized fast and have had that orange color for over a month now without fruiting. I cold shocked for a week at 10C, but still nothing. How long did your blocks sit before first flush? I have mine in 98% humidity with good air exchange.

Instead these are 2 pics of my P.nameko totally misunderstood under the table of my pc. It comes from the strain i used in August that gave me poor results( here ).
In effect i believe it will never fruit but i accept suggestions:

temps are around 18-19°C here.

micololo2: great shot!
RogerRabbit: why do you cold shock for all that time every block you cultivate? how much is the range generallt of temperatures for a cold shock? In my opinion try to lower a bit the humidity!

Hi Mr. Rabbit

Temp. were fluctuating 2-14C. Sitting 16 days, sometimes a little more.
Maybe there is to much nutrients in your final substrates.
Did you try this. Shocking them letting the sub. in the close bag and waiting to see the primordia near the top surface before open it.
Indoor, sometimes the pins appear only after being back at higher temp after being shock for at least 7 days.

Good luck and congradulation for your works.

That's what I did. I left them in the bags for a week in the cold temperatures. Afterwards, I just cut slits in the top of the bag to use the bag itself as a 'humidity chamber'. After three weeks
of nothing, I cut the bags away. That was two weeks ago. They have the orange slime, but no primordia yet.

I supplemented the hardwood sawdust/chips with 20% by volume wheat bran just like I do for other cold weather edibles. What's your substrate?

A mix of 80% red oak sawdust + 20% sugar maple wood chips and after this 10% wheat bran + 1% broken shell + 1% gypsum to the mix of sawdust-wood chip. All proportions in dry weight.

I don't know if you can do this with Nameko but to get more flushes with some species (like Eryngii to wake them up) I shock the blocks in cold water by dunking them like Shiitake. With the difference
that I dunk them only few minutes (around 15 minutes for Eryngii).

If you have few blocks you maybe could try one. Often that awake the sleepy mycelium. Beware because if the block drink to much water it can kill or damage the mycelium or distroy the block.
If you have anough Nameko blocks try another one by scratching the darker spot on the surface and then dunk it. I don't know how much time dunking could be good for this specie.
If you try one with Nameko let me know what happened.

As you probably know, Nameko is a lot harder to grow without his protecting bag, but you're a fabulous grower, you'll get them.

Good luck and later+

hey roger, my first block nameko failed too, here's a link to my grow, on the offchance you pick anything up that's different -
link

(i used the recipe in Stamets' GGMM (Growing Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms) page 150-151 - "by volume - 8 sawdust : 4 woodchips : 1 bran : 1/8 gypsum, wetted to 65%")

nice grow lolo, i love the way you tried to get the extra outta the block, and ended up getting more than you bargained for

I love and miss Nameko so much.

Do you have to up the humidity a lot to get them to fruit?

I still have three of the blocks in the bags. I cut several slits in the bags to up the air exchange, but the bag is still intact so the top of the block stays moist. The ones that I cut completely
out of the bags dried out, so I won't try that again. They didn't absorb much water at all in a 24 hour soak. I have a few more that only the top of the bag was cut off, so I moved them near the
misting fog I use for reishi. We'll see how they do.

I even had one block i kept outside. It fruited in the fall two years ago on it's own, with the cool weather and regular rain showers.

The entire top was a huge forest. Man those are tastey.
