Is the underground rave scene dead?
    #6191120 - 10/20/06 03:41 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

I often think back to my high school days during 98'-00' and reminisce about all of the raves I went to. I lived outside of Detroit so there was quite a scene here at that time. Getting a stack of
fliers at every rave, with nothing more than a phone number to call on the night of the party. Intentionally obscure directions to an isolated empty warehouse in the industrial sprawl of Detroit,
yet somehow always full of people. My first two acid trips were a result of frequenting raves.

Although I didn't really appreciate them at the time, I realize now how unique the experience and atmosphere was at these parties(spare the random asshole you might run into). Is there anything left
of this once thriving culture, or has the flame burned out?

Yes.

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

That scene is kinda dead I find..... A lot of parties are just being held at big venues lately... at least here in Toronto.
Back in 95 we used to line up outside cityhall and take GETTO ass school busses to a party in an old warehouse at an undesclosed location.... dirty dirty old schools vibes.... i miss that :-(

I went to a Detroit trance / DnB party in 96 at an old warehouse under the ambassador bridge... I think it was called 'Love' ... awesome vibe.. they opened the whole side wall up when the sun came
up..

Some friends went to one there. I want to say it was in 98 and it was a duo of DJ's known as Skylab 2000.

dead? yes.

sure, there are still the rare parties here and there, but certainly not like there used to. I used to go to up detroit (I was involved in the chicago scene) and remember how there was two different
parties every friday night and then two or three different parties on saturday night...every week of the year. hundreds of people at each and every event. And they were all relatively decent events.

Today, what is there? nothing.

sure, there are events every so often (once a month or every other month) but they cater to all clueless kids from the suburbs who think the rave is still relevent.

yup, remember all those run down warehouses on the southside? my favorite venue was this abandoned church. you had to climb through a hole in this chain-link fence and walk up a plywood ramp someone
put down. very small place - maybe 300 people would show up. and the main room had the letters F A I T H painted on the floor. I guess it was the church recreation room from the 1960s, but long since unused.
just an old, dead building brought back to life.

and then there was the route and dolton and harvey and the rainbow.

Haha, good ol "under the bridge" I was there quite a few times way back, also extremely underage. I don't think they ever had an official name for that building, just reffered to as under the bridge.

I miss the packard plant too. Good times there with black boogers the next morning after a long night.

Slowly, they are throwing a few parties in a old warehouse theatre here on the eastside, by Eastern market. But rave is dead.

I'm still in the Detroit scene here, but most shows are thrown at clubs, or lofts.

Dead? no
Greatly diminished? yes

In Toronto, there are still the odd illegal/breakin/warehouse party type things, its stronger during the summer when the weather is nicer, its just a matter of knowing the right people.

There are also still the odd raves which do the whole 'map-point' thing. I remeber going to some party way out in the boonies, held under a highway overpass, had to do the whole map-point/treck
through the bushes / dodge the cops kind of thing, was loads of fun.
