I don't care much for either team, and likely won't watch too much of the series, but I'm rootin' Detroit.
Only because I like tigers, and caligraphy D's are cool.

For the season they were underdogs, but for the WS everyone is picking them to win. So by default the Cards are now the underdog.

Tigers won the WS in '84 though, Cards have been waiting since '68 or '69. SO even though the Tigers are perennial losers, I'd say St. Louis is hungrier for the win.

I guess I'm tired of seeing weak Cardinal teams advance in the post-season and I could never go for a division rival - the NL Central is as weak as it gets, so the Cardinals are nothing special. I hope the Tigers stomp them.

pitching will be well rested but I find that when a team has that much time off before a playoff series that their batting can be rusty. Cards won it in 82(pretty sure they did, i wasnt alive yet) and Tigers in 84.

I hate the Cardinals so much.
Jeff Weaver fucking sucks. He's pitched his two best games of the year back-to-back, so we'll see if he can do it again. I think he gets rocked tonight in Detroit.

Yeah I don't see Detroit losing this game. I don't see Kenny Rogers continuing his scoreless inning streak, but I don't see Detroit losing at all.

Yeah, I dont like Rogers, and theres no doubt he's been pitching out of his mind as well. Heh. But the Cardinals are probably my least favorite team.
Lets not forget, Weaver was probably the worst pitcher in baseball for the first half of the season. I dont even think he got traded to St. Louis, he was just cut by his old team. So its not like he's anything special.
I really havent even heard of half the people pitching for St. Louis. I dont know how that kind of team can keep up w/ the tigers for very long.

Beating Verlander was insanely important for the Cards though. Robertson seems to me the most beatable of the four starters for the Tigers, whereas the other 3 have been pretty lights out.

Well, Rogers is a damn cheater (pine tar). he should have been kicked out of the game after the first inning. Sean Casey dropped his elbow into a pitch that may have been a strike. This shit is ridiculous. Cards will still win it. Weaver wont allow more than 2 runs. Cards win 5-3.

yeah, but he shouldnt have been allowed to pitch after that shit. if sammy sosa hits with a corked bat, he gets thrown out. rogers is clearly caught with pine tar on his hand and is allowed to pitch the rest of the game. its bulshit really. no way you can tell me that it isnt.

Thing is he wasn't caught. He washed it off before the umps got a chance to say anything. The Cards and Tigers each have people watching the Fox broadcast, so they informed the dugout to tell him to wash it off.

sosa was caught when the bat exploded and the umpire noticed the cork. as for rogers, the umpires did look at his hand after the first (just read the reports) and told him to wash it off. they concluded the substance was just dirt. I'd rather believe someone who looked at his hand than those that did not and rushed to judgement.

its pretty funny that rogers just so happened to have that little dirt spot right there on his hand in every postseason game he pitched this year. that didnt look like dirt to me. Either he was picking his ass, the clubhouse ran out of toilet paper, or he was cheating

larussa + leyland = assbuddies. baseball doesnt need anymore negative publicity and kicking a 41yr old pitcher who is looking to set a record for consecutive scoreless innings in the postseason would cause a lot of negative publicity. every story is conflicting. rogers just happened to notice the dirtspot after the 1st inning. funny that dirt spot has been in the exact same spot every postseason game. Rogers claimed he was not asked to wash it off, he did it voluntarily. However the umps say that they asked him to wash it off. Its all really shady.

I didn't see it in any previous games he pitched.
Tigers in 7. Gonna be a nailbiter folks.

clearly it was pine tar ... anyone who knows what pine tar is and knows what dirt is . can tell you by looking at those pics.. that it isnt dirt .. i didnt see it in any of the other previous games either.. i think he probably just threw some on his hand cause it was so cold out you loose feeling in your hand and he wanted a better grip.. yea its technically cheating.. but its baseball and the rules will be skirted until they cant be skirted anymore...

wtf was with this highlight on ESPN today, they saw dirt on the pitchers hand? Why were they making that a big deal?

I change my mind. After seeing ESPN footage of previous ALCS games, I think Kenny Rogers had pinetar on his hand. He cheated, but still pitched amazing after he washed his hands off.

thanks, glad you watched some footage. he cheated. pine tar wasnt to keep his hands warm. He pitched earlier in the postseason when it wasnt very cold with tar on his hands. im not discrediting that he threw an amazing game. but he should have been thrown out after the 1st inning. umps did catch him on it, they asked him to wash it off. LaRussa would of had to force the issue to get him tossed, thats the rules.

Jim Leyland had a statement where he said he smoked almost a full carton of cigs waiting to find out if it would be delayed or not.

Yeah, he's an addict for sure.
They said thats why he's always so pissed off looking in the dug-out, is 'cause they told him he cant smoke...
I saw a bunch of pictures of him in the hallway under the dugout, sucking down cigs like they were going out of style...

St Louis looks, it seems as if they want it harder. These Tiger errors are unacceptable. However, the god damn spread wasn't covered

hahha granderson falling was one of the funniest things ive seen in sports. the announcers dont shut up about how amazing the tigers pitching is. it has failed to amaze me so far. zumaya throws hard, especially over the first baseman. im surprised that we are up 3-1 without much help from pujols.

yeah because the tigers are just a much better team and STL doesnt really deserve to be where they are because they arent that great of a team (i mean this as complete sarcasm). someone give them some fucking credit. they are a good team that is beating the tigers and doing it in a dominant way. sure errors played a big factor in this game but stl still played a hell of a game. the errors just put them over the top

Will Leitch, the blogger who runs deadspin.com, is a die-hard Cardinals fan and he's going to game 5 tonight in St. Louis after flying out there from New York. What's funny is that this season, at games that he has attended, the Cardinals are 0-7.
