There are three main interests in Iraq, Kurd, Sunni and Shia.
The Kurds in the north aren't a problem (maybe except for Turkey), they have been running as a pretty much autonomous region for a while. They have oil wealth and can support a decent economy, and are mostly trade and western friendly.
The Shia in the south also have oil wealth and after a withdrawal will most likely form a close relationship with Iran, this is the real strategic threat that bothers America and Britain.
The Sunni in the middle have dry dirt, hardcore religion and all the skills that come from being in charge in a brutal dictatorship.
The main battle after we leave it will be between Sunni and Shia. Shia will have the backing on Iran, which will extending its power greatly in the region. Syria will give the kind of support the Palestinians get, fuck all that matters.
I would withdraw, and maintain a strategic presence in Kurdistan mainly concerning Iran's activities, which I don't think the Kurds would have a problem with, especially in exchange for aid and diplomatic pressure on Turkey. I would also put a great deal of effort towards ending our dependence on oil, but then I am not an oil man.

Economist, unlike Americans, Iraqis don't give a shit about material items and therefore markets would not flourish in Iraq. Beyond buying some fruit and a couple pieces of clothing, the Iraqi market would not stabilize, let alone strengthen the country. Also, I was implying that the Iraqis want a theocracy. That's the only type of government that they see as legitimate. So much of your argument is just hot air. Join the light!!!

Which Iraqis are you speaking of? You do realize there are powerful and deep ethnic and sectarian divisions in Iraq, right? There is no one Iraqi people. There certainly is no unity or consensus on opinion of government.

I'd call up Ahmadinejad and say, "Sorry we've been so rude, I hope we can work things out and develop strong economic ties. Here you go, you can even have Iraq as a gesture of our goodwill. Adios amigo."
