I skipped work today and called in sick because I needed some me-time. I have been being mr. mom lately to help my wife out with getting her internship done, so today I thought I would devote the normal 8:00 - 5:00 to myself..

I plan on doing some myco work today, and I stepped out to get some supplies....

I bought some straw bales from michaels, and went to the gourmet market and got some brown rice, potatoe flakes, honey, a coffee gringer, brown rice, dried sea kelp powder, a pound of poppy seeds(unrelated) and some gelatin.

The ingredients on the box of gelatin (unflavored) say Ingredients: Gelatin....
Can I utilize this to make a medium for some petri dishes?

BTW, Garden ridge is down to nothing in their halloween stuff, it's all christmas decor now.. But michaels had a few sraw bales left for $4 each.

gelatin does work "ok" for a poor-mans agar... but the problem with it is the protien chains that make it gel up aren't as "sturdy" as in agar. the protiens can be damaged by excessive heat, and when they're damaged they won't gel up... also once its heated once and gelled once its done, unlike agar which you can allow to solidify, re-heat to melt again, and it will re-solidify again... so you might have to play around to reach a happy medium where you reach sterilization without overcooking and destroying it, and pay attention to how you prepare it. its not as thick or solid as agar once it does gel either so it makes taking wedges a little harder. you would have been better off picking up actual agar, as they probably would have had it at the gourmet market - they sell food grade agar as a vegetarian substitute for gelatin.

Ahhh...Well. I asked and no one could find it for me...
I mean, you would think that a place like that would have it, but no luck.

I think I will use this tek for today. It looks interesting...
