Please help beginner with fruiting problems
    #6183945 - 10/18/06 08:00 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Can someone help me please. I just took some fully colonized cakes out and made a fruiting chamber. It is a storage tote, but the lid is not extremely tight. I am using perlite and water. I have had them in there for two days now and the temp is being regulated fine. The problem I am having is I cannot get the rh up high enough. Could there be too much water? The highest I have seen it is 82% but on average its in the 70's. Could this be because of my lid. Would a plastic wrap or press and seal work better. My hygrometer was about 20 bucks on amazon, so I am not sure if it is entirely accurate. I also did not dunk the cakes or anything because when I searched for dunking, all I could find was dunking between flushes. Should I take them out and dunk? Also I was wondering about how many hours exactly to expose them to light? Thanks to all the people that help me. I really appreciate it. Hopefully I will have some pics soon.

Maybe. The perlite should be damp but not submerged. If you have an inch of perlite then you should have no more than 1/2 inch of water.

There is a hygrometer calibration tek in the FAQ that uses salt to check a hygrometers accuracy. Try it and see how close yours is. Your humidity might be just fine.

Not absolutely necessary (unless they've begun to dry), but it could boost the yields on that first flush.

There is no exact amount required. A couple of hours per day is plenty. Avoid direct sunlight.

Good luck!

I'm having similar troubles, although I'm using lava rocks instead of perlite, I've got about 3.5 inches of rock and about 2-2.5 inches of water underneath with a 100 gallon air pump goin 24/7, should I change my water ratio to mazimize humidity?

By the way I have a standard PMP setup.

I have never used lava rock so I cannot give you a definite answer, but it sounds as though it could be worth a try.
