Florida Panhandle orange/brown tree huggers...what are these?
    #6180549 - 10/17/06 09:19 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

found in Pensacola, Florida. it has been raining a LOT for quite a few days. warm, 80-86. First off, does anyone know what these are? and would this be a good indication that cubes are growing?

Hmm, well the pictures don't show much detail. I'm not totally sure what those are. I just can't tell from those pictures alone, sorry.

Can't you get better ones or at least show one closeup with the gills, stem, etc. in the pic? Maybe at least attempt a description?

The "orange/brown" colors you mentioned aren't visible to me in the pictures but those colors and growth in clusters are consistent with honeys. Something about that picture does not look like honey mushrooms though, maybe it's just the pic. :ohwell:

here's some better pics. sorry about the orange/brown description. they're actually, and light, semi-transluscent tan color. they were growing in small, thick patches off of an oak tree, coming out from between cracks in the bark.

Those last three pictures sort of resemble Armillaria tabescens, ringless honeys. Kind of still hard to see good detail but they look about right. Especially since they were growing in clusters off of a live tree. I see them out in my area by the 1000s in the fall.

If they are that species they are edible. They have to be cooked thoroughly first. Some sources suggest even parboiling first. They have been known to cause bad reactions, stomach upset in certain people. It is suggested to only try a very small amount the first time to be sure you are not one of "those people".

I'd recommend only consuming your own finds after you can feel 100% about an ID for yourself. Unless of course you know a certified expert. Never know when someone on here could make an error. We do try our best though

Take a spore print to narrow down what they really are. Be 100% sure you know what your consuming. There are deadly brown mushrooms that also grow on wood.

If it's been raining a good deal, I'd check your cube spots.  Different mushrooms fruit in different conditions at different times.  The appearance of one mushroom does not indicate the fruiting of another.  The only way to know for sure is to look.
