Bisporella citrina??

I believe this is Bisporella citrina. Found on a decaying long in northern Illinois. Any thoughts?

It has a resemblance to that species, but it seems not as yellow. I don't have any good references to the ascomycetes. Perhaps it's B. pallescens?

Happy mushrooming!

I can't dig up any photos of B. pallescens, so I can't say if it could be.

In fact, I could only find reference of 3 species of Bisporella:
B. citrina
B. sulfurina
B. pallescens

B. sulfurina
and B. citrina appear virtually identical, and notably more yellow than the mushrooms pictured above.  Which leaves B. pallescens.  If it were not B. pallescens, I would not be surprised if perhaps TomCats camera is a little off on the colour, or if the mushroom is just an example of natural variation.  Both seem easily attributable to the discrepancy... though it very well could be B. pallescens as you guessed.

The books on these little ascomycetes tend to be pretty hard to find. From experience, there's a TON of these little guys out there that most people never notice, and they're impossible to tell apart without a microscope. The last one I had specific experience with was Scutellinia. If you search around you'll find a few species in the genus (usually as notes under S. scutellata). But the key in the official book lists about a dozen species that all look pretty much alike. The differences are in things like how long the hairs are on the edge of the cup and details about the spores.

Happy mushrooming!
