Help! Identification required!
    #6175586 - 10/16/06 05:53 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I'm new to shrooming; in fact, I've yet to try it. It is the season here in England and, imagine my surprise when I found these growing by a tree in my back garden. Unfortunately, I'm quite sure they are of a poisonous mushroom variety, but I was hoping that one of the resident experts on this site could confirm this.

Here are the required details filled out to the best of my current knowledge:

* Habitat - in my back garden next to a tree. Common garden soil? Found in South East England, UK.
* Characteristics of the gills - please see photos.
* Characteristics of the stem - Perhaps 6 - 10 inches long. Pale cream / off white in colour. Hollow and tends to break up easily when mushroom is picked. Thin (perhaps 0.5 cm thick).
* Characteristics of the cap - Diameter - 2 or 3 inches. Beige / light brown initially and then darkening to dark brown after a few days. Cone like initially and then becoming spherical.
* Spore print color - very dark brown once the mushrooms have turned dark brown in colour
* Color that the mushroom bruises - I'm not sure
* Scent of the mushroom - Plant like smell, like aloe vera.
* Anything else you might find important - First 3 photos are of young mushrooms, and the next 3 show the mushroom in a more mature state about 2 days later.

Mica Caps (Coprinus Micaceus). Edible, but not advised with alcohol.

While they are Coprinellus, I wouldn't commit to C. micaceus. There are too many very similar species to be certain without verifying the universal veil remnants.

Once the gills are no longer white they're not really edible anyway.

Happy mushrooming!

If you do eat them catch them before the gills darken.

Very true. It seems that every egg shaped, brown inky cap is assumed as C. micaceus.
