ID Confirm Please - Horse Mushroom Agaricus Arvensis
    #6170919 - 10/15/06 04:01 AM (17 years, 4 months ago)

These were found growing in an SLC, Utah window well. They have a pleasant but weak aroma.

Habitat: Window well, not sure of substrate, naturally cased with some potting soil that fell from the garden above the window well.

Gills: Dark Brown, free

Stem: White with veil

Cap: Flat. Some brown coloring in the center.

Spore print: Brown

No bruising noted.

Is this the Horse Mushroom Agaricus Arvensis? If it is, any preparation suggestions?

Thanks!

I dunno, the cap seems a bit dark for a. arvensis. Also, the stem of arvensis bruises yellow, but you noted no bruising reactions?

I haven't seen A. arvensis display a convex pileus as the mushroom pictured above does... Agaricus are a pain to ID.

Looks like the flat-topped agaricus I found last week.

I'd be certain of your ID before cookin' those up.

Horse mushrooms bruise a faint yellow colour and also turn slightly yellow when in the frying pan, nothing vivid though like yellow stainers! Don't look like A. Arvensis to me.
