types of liberty cap
    #5184000 - 01/15/06 03:59 PM (18 years, 1 month ago)

i remember when i went hunting in october the libs we found often had quite varied appearences in the shape and appearence. However i was not 100% sure they were all libs so i ended up throwing quite a few away. Can anyone say for sure how closely semilanceata conform to the stereotypical iamge of them?

Possibly one of the most important questions for an amateur to ask and the only man to reply is one who's never hunted semilanceata?

This is being bumped, and please let's hear some decent answers - many rely upon these forums.

This is a good example of bumping an old thread.

Thanks Hashishi.

Like all mushrooms liberty caps can vary quite a bit in appearance. I have never hunted them either, but I have seen quite a few pictures of them on line here. Perhaps one of the experienced P. semilanceata hunters will be able to answer this question.

When in doubt about any mushroom's ID it is better to check ID criteria than to go by looks. Once you are familiar with a species, you can often rule out look-a-likes by smell.

They vary a lot, sometimes they're even bright blue apparently! I've to see it to believe it.

The shapes can vary a lot, but theres certain characteristics that give it away such as, the nipple, colour being strawlike when dry, brown almost transparent when wet, and hidden gills.
