All-Bran juice BEATS honey-water!

All the talk about buying malt, dextrose, etc. isn't necessary, IMO. You need look no further than the list of ingredients on the side of a box of Kellogg's All-Bran cereal. It's mostly malt and dextrose! In side-by-side comparisons of honey water and the liquid from All-Bran soaked in bottled spring water, the All-Bran solution produced more abundant mycelial growth. This is impressive, given that the honey water jar was twice the volume of the All-Bran test, AND the honey water got innoculated with more cc's from the spore syringe. As for the ratios of water to All-Bran, I don't have the exact numbers with me, but I attempted to achieve a 5% (by weight) malt concentration in the water. The tek is basically this: Dump a quantity of All-Bran cereal into a quart jar or large glass bowl. Add a large quantity of water, cover with Saran Wrap. The cereal will soon expand and create a slurry, with a clear tan-colored liquid portion at the top. Pour off the clear layer, or strain the slurry many times until you get an acceptably clear solution. Note: I did not achieve this because my pouring skills were impaired, thus the solution was cloudy. More nutrients for the mycelia, I figured --just harder to see contaminants. The All-Bran juice was placed in a glass (Pyrex) bowl, covered with Saran Wrap, and boiled in a clean microwave at 70% power for 5 to 7 minutes. After cooling overnight in the microwave, 2 cc's of PR spore solution were injected through the Saran Wrap. The bowl's pliable plastic lid was snapped in place over the Saran Wrap. After colonization was well underway (about a week), it was time to start aeration. The bowl's lid was carefully removed to leave the Saran Wrap in place, and a 3/4" hole was cut in the lid. A double layer of Swiffer/Grab-It material was duct taped over the hole to allow air to escape. An aquarium air pump was rigged to bubble thru 8 oz. of hydrogen peroxide, and the H2O2-scrubbed air was bubbled thru the All-Bran liquid using aquarium air tubing punched thru a 2nd hole in the plastic bowl lid. After 3 weeks, the mycelial solution had the consistency and appearance of egg-drop soup! A 3 cup jar of honey water was created at the same time. It received the same aeration treatment as the All-Bran bowl. The All-Bran bowl produced thicker, more robust mycelial growth compared to the honey-water jar, despite having about half the volume of liquid. Feel free to post questions. --YourHighness

very interesting . i havent had much luck with honey water, or the karo tek. so i am going to give this one a try. im going to put the cerial in a old CLEAN t-shirt, and pour hot, not boiling water on it, and let it steep. being in the tshirt, should eliminate most of the straining

no, bacteria set in. i just nuked it, maybe if i pc'ed it, it might have im just a flop at liquid suspensions lol i just use agar now, i got that down w/ no problems, and its the same results with liquid suspensions, more myc, and if i break it down in sterile water, can even inject it
