Math and mushrooms!
    #6169036 - 10/14/06 01:25 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

I finally got around to eating some homegrown golden teacher mushrooms last night.  The mushrooms are in between the fresh and dry state, but I believe dried weight was approximately 2.5 dried grams.

I have taken a few hits of acid back when I was younger so I am familiar with psychedelic effect but I had never taken enough mushrooms to feel the effects before.

I had visuals pretty similar to LSD but not nearly as intense.  The body bush was absolutely amazing.

Anyway a couple hours after ingestion I thought I would try to do some calculus III homework.  I was amazed to find out that the concepts made much more sense to me than when I was sober.  When I'm sober I can mechanically do most of the problems but I struggle with the underlying concepts of what it all actually means.  It felt like a door had opened in my mind.  Everything seemed to make more sense.  I am still not sure if it was really higher understanding or just false feelings.  I seem to remember everything that I learned last night very vividly still.  It's like I have a photographic memory when on mushrooms.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I would say this was one of the most profound and beautiful experiences of my life.  I am eager to sail the psychedelic waters again next weekend.

Lol @ mushies and homework. Well that's pretty cool that you were able to have such a powerful experience doing calculus on mushrooms!

I've had a similar thing happen with LSD and Accounting -- I had a stellar LSD trip, then I was 'pretty much' back to baseline (like, 95%) - and started to work on accounting. I was able to see patterns in how to approach problems that I didnt 'get' before - and came up with a system of tackling the homework, that I then used for the rest of the semester and it helped loads, ended up getting either a B+ or A- in the class.

LOL I might have to try this with my Differential Equations class. Although I don't think it will work too well. Usually I can't even read anything while tripping yet alone try to do math homework.

~peace out

Dont think I'd want to attempt it while peaking, but while at the end of the comedown / in the afterglow period however....

I did this in my Calculus 3/Differential Equations class once, and did much more homework high on marijuana. Worked well enough, to the point i started attending class high for higher understanding.

I am the same way. But I am on a vacation from weed for a while now. So I have been having some problem with homework. I am only on day 3 of my abstinance from weed and that seems to be the only problem I have. Sure do miss going to class high.

The funny thing about calculus... is it's much simpler than people think.

Calculus is like the simplest, most straight forward concepts, it's just in the ridiculous language of numbers.

I mean... all calculus is... is looking at the patterns of change through the lens of counting.

We could easily start teaching calculus in grade 6, if we had the balls.

I totally agree with you there. I don't think that calculus is actually difficult after you get the basic concept of it down. The thing is that you are trained to think a certain way about math and then comes calculus. It is totally different than any other type of math there is.

You nailed it. That is exactly how I feel.

I always totally got the concepts of calculus. It was re-arranging the equations that were super-duper algebra heavy that gave me a headache because I'd get so confused by all the "math-language".

Yeah, I think about it in a similar, yet different fashion. I find the thing that seems to be increasing the most, as math progresses in what is taught, is uncertainty. It was like when I was in elementary school the teachers were the supreme knowers of math, and they knew what was, and what wasn't.

The came junior/high school and math started getting more complicated, and you'd see the occasional teacher at a loss for exactly what the right answer was.

Then calculus came along, and suddenly math wasn't about what the teachers knew any more... it was just about 'figuring out'.

Again, similar but different. I first learned to solve problems with rate of change based on natural intuition, before I had been taught any calculus theory. What was my tool? Iterations.

I learned calculus myself, in a programming environment, before I ever knew what it was. A circle drawn one pixel to the left each time became a circle in motion. It's the simple process of having the series of iterations fade into the single idea of what it represents, that seems to me to be the essence of 'calculus thought'.

I find I get this while being stoned, On mushrooms I have the inspiration and the mind but I just can't concentrate enough, my mind jumps about too much.

I'm a history major, and therefore scared of math.

But the other night I started reading some stuff for my medieval ireland class, old tax records and crap from the Reformation period (15th and 16th centuries). I understood it awesome, but it was too boring to focus.
