Vegetable oil or Molasses in a compost pile provide quick energy for microbes so that their populations can skyrocket, speeding your composting time.

Once you start a compost, you want it to finish before you use it as substrate.  Otherwise, there may be residual amounts of ammonia/bacteria/etc. that may hamper growth of your mushies.  The time it takes could be a few days if you heat the compost with steam, or a few months if it is out in the cold weather.  It just depends.  30 days in a warm location and with a good sized pile is probably enough.

As far as adding things...  You are looking for the right balance of various things, mostly Carbon:Nitrogen ratio.  Something like 30:1 is good at the start.  Leaf rot might be too decomposed already and grass clippings may be too fresh (green).  Coffee grounds will boost your nitrogen, so significant addition would require carbohydrate boost to maintain C:N.

If you really want to get technical, you should do some hefty reading.  You could always take the, "throw it in a pile and pray" approach.

Soaking grains in coffee/dogfood/poo water is good.  Someone on this forum spoke about the mycelium liking the "flavor" of the grains better after soaking.  I think this may be true.  After all, mushrooms prefer poo for a reason...

Damn!  Want to be friends?  :naughty:

If you are going to do experiements, you should keep a notebook and let us know what happens.  It doesn't really matter how scientific you get, just give us what you find out...

A nice and simple compost mixture is; 25 parts fresh or somewhat fresh horse manure to 5 parts of brown leaves or wheat straw shredded up. Mix the ingredients up well, while lightly misting the mixture with a garden hose. You want the mixture to be moist, not saturated. Lay a tarp or plastic down before adding the ingredients so worms or other pests can't get into the pile from underneath. A concrete pad is a nice place for a compost pile for sure. You can also add some garden gypsum as well. All I do is take a handful of gypsum and then coat the top of the ingredients prior to mixing them. Just a generous coat on the top, no need in going overboard with the gypsum. Then lightly cover the mixed and hydrated pile with a tarp or plastic. Check the pile every few days to see how the hydration is. If it's warm with low RH's in your area, then you may need to lightly mist the top of the pile. You'll see if the top of the pile's drying out easily. Maintain that for 2 weeks and then give it a good mixing, getting the ingredients on the outside of the pile mixed into the center of the pile. 2 more weeks and it should nearly be done. It depends on a few factors like, pile's size, temperatures of the enviroment and the core temps of the pile, mositure, exc. It's very simple and almost a neglectful way of composting a great substrate material.
