could sterilized jars sit around for a few days if they are unopened and still be sterile? i sterilized mine 5 days ago and cant inoculate until tonight? is it likely that my jars survived and are still contaminant-free??

They should be, I've always thought that sterilized jars stay sterilized.... I mean, unless you buy into stuff like spontanious germination theories or alchemy...

But alas, i've heard it's not always this way... and that you can get a build up. You should innoculate soon in case there is a contam... the spores can fight it, sorta.

thanks hermit! one question though? when i'm sterilizing my syringe using alcohol, do i have to burn the alcohol off? willthe alcohol on the needle kill the spores as their coming out?

Remeber the death sequence on thrax in osmosis jones? Yes, alcohol kills germs, so does heat. Thats why I dip my syringe into the flamming alcohol to get all the germs dead, then u heat it up untill it's read just to be sure.... Flamming should be sufficient. Just alcohol might be ok, i think alcohol does kill spores though, but it's not like it's going to kill all of them...

dont even worry about it alcohol evaporates really quick so its no problem what so ever

i would use alcohol at all. i'm not critisizing but when u inject the needle with alcolhol still on the needle. ur basically putting that alcohol in the substulate, which may be enough to contam it. i'd stick with heating up the needle. it works perfectly, and it's worth teh risk of contamin'

alcohol contaminating substrate! hahaha, thats a good one. the alcohol would just kill everything and guarentee no contamination, if you put enough in, but i dont think a drop of alcohol on the end of a syringe will do much damage, it will probobly evaporate before it makes it to the jar.
