last letter to friday jones (from heinlein novel _friday_ )
~~~
... I think that you are immune to the temptations of religion. If you are not, I cannot help you, any more than I could keep you from acquiring a drug habit. A religion is sometimes a source of happiness and I would not deprive anyone of happiness. But is is a comfort appropriate for the weak, not for the strong --- and you are strong. The trouble with religion --- any religion --- is that a religionist, having accepted certain propositions by faith, cannot thereafter judge those propostions by evidence. One may bask at the warm fire of faith or choose to live in the bleak uncertainty of reason --- but one cannot have both.
(this excerpted from a private letter to Ms. Friday Jones from Dr. Hartley M. Baldwin, the late CEO of System Enterprises...)
Knowing is different from faith. But yeah, the vast majority of religion is about faith rather than achieving knowledge through enlightenment.
It all comes down to whether you're going to follow someone else's version of spirituality or you're going to discover your own. I'd rather figure it out myself, that way I know its true for me.
Yeah, that's what I think. There is no one way to enlightenment, however there are certain paths that are shorter than others. Or something.
