Yummy Lion's Mane

Hericium erinaceus harvested yesterday. I've been picking it every year from the same tree. These are the largest ever, and the first time for two fruits. Got 5 pounds of it after cooking down- forgot to weigh before cleaning. Most went to friends, I'll make a few quiches from it as usual.
I've cloned this one before, but finally lost mine to contamination after keeping it in jars over a year. It was vigorous and easy from a bleach/blender process, and it kept fruiting in the jars. I'll try it again next year.
It grows on a living bigleaf maple, from a storm-damage scar several years old, in Forest Park in Portland.
Camera batteries died, these are bad phone pics- but you can see my hand in both for scale.

Wow. Nice find. I've been looking for some of that all year but with no luck.
I haven't had any in a long time.

I'm jealous, never found one unfortunately. Even the local mycologists who have been in the field for 40+ years have only found one or two

Awesome find! I found my first ones about a month and a half ago. Found them at night driving down a back road over a ridge. They are a rare in these parts. i think RR has found a lot of them though.

I didn't realize that they were considered that rare. Around here they are listed as being "fairly common". I can't speak for the UK though. I found around 5-6 patches the past 2 falls. Yet to see any this year.

When i think of common mushrooms i think of oysters, maitake, and chicken of the woods. Those we picked by the shopping bag full the past two months maybe totaling a 100+ pounds, probably atleast 1 full shopping bag of Pleurotus ostreatus, one bag of Craterellus fallax, 2 bags of Laetiporus sulphureus, and atleast five probably 7 bags of Grifola frondosa.
Found probably just as much lion's mane as Gyromitra's haul and these were the first i ever found.
Maybe they are just rare in my neck of the woods

Yup I'm happy with it too. I grew up around here and never found any before or since- just on this one tree. I always take the old or buggy parts back out near likely looking trees after cleaning to give more spores a chance to spread.
It's a little earlier this year than before too, a week or two. I went by not expecting to see much but the pre-fruiting mycelium knots poking out, but the top was already browning a little. It has only fruited once per year since I've known of it.
I shouldn't have said it was "in" Forest Park, it's not technically inside the border. I keep saying someday I'll inoculate dome downed trees when I gat a bunch of spawn together but it hasn't happened, yet.

I am an urban picker too. Within 20 miles of New york City, in the suburbs. I picked many in Thomas Edisons yard.

Nice find. I found several of those myself the other day. One of which was the size of dunk ball or so. It was kinda bitter eaten off the tree, but when cooked was yummy.

mjgecko, I only sort of sauteed them lightly, just cooking them enough to try freezing them. The didn't shrink down much. (Freezer test worked, they didn't turn to rope or slime if cooked first.)
I like to bake them in quiche, especially one with pale seafood like crab and scallops. No one can figure out what kind of weird tentacled creature they're eating.
I canned some of this one in chicken stock too, don't know what inspiration will hit for those later. Probably soup type things to show of the weird shape. Bouillabaise would be fun with them I bet.
Sorry I can't give recipes... my only cooking MO is pulling stuff out and making something up as I go along. I don't even have measuring cups or spoons.
Never tried it raw hotnuts, doesn't sound too good.
