stalling always mean contaminations?
    #6143551 - 10/07/06 02:23 PM (16 years, 5 months ago)

So far only 4 WBS jars made it out of 5. Except, one jar out of the 3 last standing has stalled for a couple of days while the other 3 blossom with tuns of mycelium growth. The jar that has stalled, could it be contams or just slow growth? I don't see any growth of contams yet(keeping fingers crossed). I guess we shall see in a couple days.

All the jars were inoculated at the same time and put in the same environment at 83 degrees fahrenheit.

Other than contaminants, the biggest cause of stalling is improper/no gas exchange. Make sure your jars have filtered lids with openings for the gasses to escape.

. Hrm.... Ya, I understand this.

All jar lids have 4 injection holes and one big hole in the middle of the lid for a total of 5 holes with coffee filters. They are incubating in the same place at a steady 83 degrees fahrenheit. 3 jars are fully colonized now while the 4th jar stalled with some mycelium growth. I honestly think this jar is suffering from contaminations. I'll let this jar sit for a longer period of time.

If it's contamination, how long should signs show up of bacteria and/or mold?

You're not using coffee filters for mycology filters are you? If so, you will be extremely lucky if you only have a 40% failure rate. Coffee filters are for coffee. Trying to catch a mold spore or bacteria with a coffee filter would be like trying to catch a gnat with a fishing net.

Ya, I'm really lucky then. I will use tyvek envelopes for now on.

Sweet! My jar just started to show some more signs of mycelium. I'm assuming after shaking the jar it needed a couple days to heal to start growing again?
